One minute I was walking home from the grocery store, and the next I was standing in front of a giant stone portal.
I swear to God it wasn’t there before, and then poof, there it is.
I looked around, but I was standing in the middle of a damn jungle.
The trees were giant, and vines hung down from the branches.
There were giant flowers that smelt like shit, and everything else seemed to be quiet.
I looked at the portal, and I guess I had to go through it.
I mean what else could I do?
I’m twenty-three years old, and I don’t have any special powers.
I am just an ordinary guy working every gig he could get.
Going through the portal might give me some answers.
I walked up to the portal, and as I did, it started glowing.
Portal of Shadows: Escape from Serpentina
I hesitate before the glowing portal, my heart racing.
I turn around, scanning the dense jungle for an alternate path.
The giant trees and hanging vines obscure my view, but I spot a narrow trail.
It's almost invisible, winding between the massive trunks like a snake.
I decide to follow it, hoping it leads away from the portal and the unknown world it represents.
As I walk, the stench of the giant flowers grows stronger, making me gag.
The air is thick with the putrid smell, and I can feel it coating my tongue.
I hear rustling in the underbrush and freeze, fearing the lamias might be nearby.
My senses are on high alert, and I strain my ears to pinpoint the sound.
I crouch low, inching forward, determined to find a way out of this nightmare.
The rustling grows louder, and I can tell whatever is making the noise is moving in my direction.
I grip a nearby vine tightly, ready to swing up into the trees if needed.
Suddenly, a figure emerges from the underbrush.
It's a woman, dressed in tattered clothing, her eyes sunken and her skin pale.
She looks like she's been through hell, and I wonder if she's another prisoner like me.
"Who are you?" I whisper, trying not to startle her.
She looks up at me, her eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of fear and desperation.
"Run," she whispers back, her voice barely audible. "They're coming."
And with that, she takes off down the trail, disappearing into the dense foliage.
I hesitate for a split second before following her, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Wait!" I call out, struggling to keep up. "Who’s coming?"
She glances back, her face a mask of urgency. "The Guardians of the Portal—they won't let us leave alive."
I stumble over a root, adrenaline surging through me. "How do we stop them?"
