It was the 4th of July, Independence Day in the United States of America.
My best friend, Emily, and I had gone to a festival in a park near our town.
There were food stalls, game booths, and a large stage set up with chairs for the audience.
We were skeptical about going, but it sounded like fun, so we decided to give it a shot.
As we walked through the crowded grounds, we noticed they had decorated everything with red, white, and blue.
Balloons, streamers, flags, and even little paper flowers were everywhere.
We rolled our eyes at each other.
"Gag me," Sarah said, making me crack up.
After a few hours of eating and playing games, we decided to find seats by the stage to watch the fireworks when they started at dusk.
The emcee announced the fireworks would be synchronized to music, and then nothing happened for several minutes.
We were both antsy to get the celebration over with so we could leave.
Finally, the music started, and fireworks began exploding in the sky.
We both settled in to watch the show.
After a few minutes, I noticed that I was feeling strange.
I felt lighter… and happier… and suddenly more patriotic!

I turned to Emily and saw her eyes were glued to the colorful explosions above.
My skin was tingling with each burst of light, and I felt a strange urge to wave a tiny American flag I found in my pocket.
The music grew louder, and I realized it was "God Bless America."
I began swaying to the rhythm, and I saw Emily's blank expression slowly morph into a wide smile.
Her body started moving with mine, and we were both smiling at the sky.
The crowd around us cheered, and I had an overwhelming urge to cheer with them.
My hand reached out to touch Emily's arm, and I asked her if she was feeling what I was.
She turned to me with her eyes glazed and sparkling, and said "What?"
"Do you feel like... something's taking over?" I asked, my voice barely audible over the music.
Emily blinked, her smile unwavering, and replied, "It's like the fireworks are inside me, making me feel... different."
I nodded, and we both continued to sway to the music.
The fireworks were getting more intense, and I could feel my body moving faster.
I looked at Emily and saw she was moving with me, in sync.
We were both waving our flags in the air, and I felt like I was melting into her.
The music reached its climax, and the fireworks exploded in a huge burst of color.
The crowd erupted in cheers, and Emily and I hugged each other tightly.
I felt like I had never been so close to anyone before.
The music changed to "America the Beautiful," and we began dancing together, our bodies moving in perfect harmony.
We twirled around each other, laughing and cheering as the fireworks continued to explode above us.
I felt like I was one with Emily, like we were two parts of a whole that had finally come together.

As the song came to an end, I turned to Emily and saw she was still smiling at me.
I smiled back at her, feeling a sense of connection that went beyond words.
We hugged again, holding each other tightly as the fireworks continued to light up the sky.
As the last song came on, "My Country 'Tis of Thee," Emily and I stood up and began dancing again.
This time we were more energetic than ever before, waving our flags wildly as we moved in perfect sync with each other. The crowd around us cheered even louder than before, and I felt like we were the stars of the show.
When the song ended, we collapsed into each other's arms again, laughing and cheering as the fireworks came to an end.
As we walked away from the stage area, I noticed a guy standing by himself near the DJ booth.
He was wearing a red baseball cap with a big "USA" embroidered on it, and he was holding a microphone.
He looked familiar somehow...
Suddenly he waved at us!
"Hey! You two patriotic ladies!"
He called out over his shoulder mic as he waved at us excitedly.
"You looked like you were having so much fun out there! Come on up here!"
Emily and I exchanged confused glances, but then she shrugged and took my hand in hers.
We walked through the crowd towards him together, our hands clasped tightly as we moved in sync once again. As we approached him, he smiled widely at us and held out his hand for us to shake.

"Welcome to my booth! I'm Mark, the DJ. It was great seeing you two dance out there. Come on up and celebrate with me!"
Emily and I exchanged another glance, then shrugged and took his hand.
He led us up the stairs to his booth, where colorful lights pulsed to the beat of a patriotic remix.
We both giggled as we looked at each other's outfits.
Emily was wearing a red t-shirt with a blue heart on it, and her hair was tied up in a ponytail with a white ribbon.
I was wearing a white tank top with a big red star on it, and my hair was in a ponytail with blue ribbons.
We looked like living flags!
Mark handed us each a microphone and grinned at us.
"Go ahead, ladies! Sing along to the music!"
Emily waved her flag in the air as she sang along to the song, her voice echoing through the speakers.

I twirled around behind her, my hands clasped behind my back as I smiled at the crowd below.
The music made me feel electric, and I felt like I could do anything!
As the song came to an end, Emily turned to me and grinned.
"Let's do another one!"
We both laughed and hugged each other tightly before turning back to Mark.
He smiled at us as he began another song.
This time it was a remix of "God Bless America" mixed with a popular hip hop song. Emily and I danced around each other, waving our flags in the air as we sang along to the lyrics.
The crowd gathered around us again, their phones recording our performance as they cheered along with us.
The lights flashed around us, casting colorful shadows on our faces as we twirled and spun in sync.
As we reached the climax of the song, we collapsed into each other's arms again, laughing and cheering as the crowd cheered around us.
I glanced down at them through the flashing lights, noticing that there were even more people watching us than before...
And then I saw her.
A well-dressed woman standing off to the side of the crowd, her eyes fixed intently on Emily and me.
She was whispering something into her husband's ear while pointing in our direction...
I felt a sudden urge to move closer to Emily...

As if my body knew what hers knew... The music changed again, this time to another remix of "America the Beautiful."
The woman was still staring at us...
I held Emily's hand tightly in mine, our fingers interlocking as we moved to the beat.
The DJ booth's flashing red and blue lights illuminated our matching outfits as we twirled and swayed around each other.
Emily giggled and pressed against me, her eyes sparkling as we performed synchronized hip movements for the crowd.
The woman was still watching us, now holding her phone up to record us...
Mark turned the music up even louder, waving at us to dance closer together.

I wrapped my arm protectively around Emily's waist as we moved in sync, keeping an eye on the mysterious woman while we continued our routine.
Emily leaned in, her voice barely a whisper over the music.
"Do you think she knows us?"
I shook my head, trying to mask my unease. "I don't know, but she's definitely interested in something."
