I am pregnant.
I still can't believe it.
I just found out I am pregnant with my husband Kaze's baby.
It's only been a little over a month since we got married.
We didn't plan on having kids so soon.
Actually, I was supposed to enlist in the military next month.
But I guess that's not going to happen now.
In our world, men can get pregnant.
But that doesn't mean it's easy or accepted.
A lot of people think it's wrong or unnatural for men to be pregnant.
That it goes against what's masculine and what a man should be.
My own family had trouble accepting it at first.
They came around eventually, but they made it clear they didn't approve.
Kaze's family is a lot better about it.
His father is even a doctor who specializes in prenatal care for men.
He has been a huge help since I found out I was pregnant.
I'm only nineteen years old.
I'm not ready to be a father.
But I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make sure my baby is happy and healthy.
Kaze is twenty-one.
He is my rock, my partner, and soon-to-be father of my child.
Without him by my side, I don't think I could handle all of this.
We had a pretty hasty marriage, to say the least.
Our Baby Boy
I sit at our small kitchen table, my laptop open to job listings.
My morning tea sits untouched in front of me, having gone cold long ago.
The military rejection letter sits crumpled on the table next to me.
It was delivered yesterday.
I guess they don't waste any time rejecting people who can't fulfill their duties.
I scroll through the listings, marking down any that sound like something I could do.
Retail, office work, delivery services, and warehouse jobs.
I save the links and send them to myself so I can look at them later.
My hands shake as I type out a few more job searches.
I'm not sure if it's from nerves or morning sickness.
Our Baby Boy
My stomach is churning again.
Kaze left for his shift at the electronics store an hour ago.
He left a note saying he would ask his manager about picking up some extra hours for us. The apartment feels empty without him here.
We've lived together for a year now, but it's different now that we're married.
It feels more permanent and real somehow.
I click on a warehouse posting and quickly close it when I see that it involves heavy lifting.
No heavy lifting is allowed while I'm pregnant.
I don't want to risk hurting myself or our baby.
My phone buzzes with a text from Shinji, Kaze's older brother-in-law.
He says there's an opening at his wife's accounting firm and that he thinks I'd be a good fit for the job.
Our Baby Boy
He sends me her number so I can set up an interview.
I text Kaze about the opportunity, hoping he'll be as relieved as I am.
"That's great news!" he replies almost immediately. "I know it's not what you planned, but maybe it's a blessing in disguise."
I hesitate for a moment before typing back, "Do you really think we can make this work?"
While scrolling through job listings, I pause at a theater company's advertisement.
They are looking for part-time staff to help with their upcoming productions.
I click on the listing and read through it.
It's a small theater company that puts on local productions.
They are looking for someone to help manage their ticket counter three days a week.
The hours are flexible, and they offer competitive pay.
I save the listing and continue looking at other job postings.
I don't mention the theater job to Kaze.
The last time I brought up acting, he laughed it off as childish and told me to focus on something more practical.
But I can't help but feel drawn to the idea of performing again.
Our Baby Boy
My phone buzzes with another text from Shinji, reminding me to call his wife about the accounting job.
I sigh and dial the number, glancing at the theater listing one last time.
"Hello, this is Yuki," I say when a woman's voice answers.
"Hi Yuki, this is Hana from the accounting firm," she replies warmly. "Shinji mentioned you might be interested in joining us, and I'd love to discuss the opportunity with you."
I arrive at the accounting firm wearing my best suit.
It's a bit tight around my growing belly, but I hope it's not too noticeable.
Hana greets me in the lobby and leads me to a conference room where two senior partners are waiting.
They introduce themselves as Mr. Tanaka and Ms. Nakamura, and we begin the interview.
"So, Yuki, tell us a little bit about yourself," Ms. Nakamura says with a warm smile.
I take a deep breath and launch into my prepared speech.
"I have a degree in mathematics and some experience managing finances at an electronics store. I'm eager to learn more about accounting and contribute to your team."
Mr. Tanaka nods thoughtfully.
"That's great. What do you think you can bring to our firm?"
I hesitate for a moment before answering.
Our Baby Boy
"I'm a quick learner, and I'm comfortable working with numbers. I'm also very organized and efficient."
Ms. Nakamura smiles again.
"That sounds excellent. Can you tell us about your five-year plan?"
I pause, unsure of how much to reveal about my pregnancy.
"I'm not sure what the future holds," I say finally.
"But I'm excited about the opportunity to learn and grow with your firm." The partners exchange a look, seeming to approve of my answer.
"Great," Mr. Tanaka says.
"Now, let's talk about tax codes. How familiar are you with them?"
I launch into a detailed explanation of the tax codes I've studied, using examples from my own experience at the electronics store.
The partners listen intently, nodding along as I speak.
Our Baby Boy
After thirty minutes, Hana returns with some paperwork for me to sign.
"We'd like to offer you the position," she says with a smile.
"You can start next week."
I shake her hand, feeling the weight of my decision settle in.
During my first week at the accounting firm, I notice Ms. Nakamura watching me closely.
She sits at her desk near the entrance of the office, so she can see everyone who comes and goes.
I try to avoid drawing attention to myself, but it's hard when I have to make frequent trips to the bathroom.
My morning sickness has been worse than usual lately, and I find myself rushing to the restroom several times a day.
By Friday, I've lost count of how many times I've excused myself from my desk.
Ms. Nakamura calls me into her office as soon as I return from my third trip to the bathroom that morning.
I sit down in the chair across from her desk, trying not to fidget too much.
She looks up at me over the rim of her glasses, her eyes narrowing slightly as she takes in my appearance.
I know my suit jacket is riding up over my growing belly, but I hope it's not too noticeable. "Yuki," she says finally, sliding a piece of paper across her desk towards me.
"I wanted to talk to you about your attendance."
Our Baby Boy
I glance down at the paper and see that it's my attendance sheet for the week.
There are several blocks marked off with red X's where I've missed hours due to being in the bathroom.
"These absences are concerning," Ms. Nakamura says, tapping her pen against the desk.
"I understand that sometimes life gets in the way, but this is a professional workplace. We need our employees to be reliable and punctual."
"I'm sorry," I say quickly, feeling a surge of panic rising up inside me.
"It's just been a tough week for me."
Ms. Nakamura raises an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced by my excuse.
"I see," she says slowly.
"And what exactly is going on with you?"
I hesitate for a moment before answering.
"I'm pregnant," I say finally, feeling like I have no other choice but to be honest with her. Ms. Nakamura's expression hardens immediately.
"Are you sure?" she asks sharply.
"Yes," I reply, feeling a little defensive now.
"I'm only a few weeks along, but I've already started showing."
Ms. Nakamura sighs heavily and rubs her temples with one hand.
Our Baby Boy
"This is not ideal," she mutters under her breath.
"We can't have you missing work all the time because of morning sickness."
"I know," I say softly, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes.
"I'll do my best to manage it," I promise, knowing that this job might not be the right fit after all.
