I was rummaging through the trash bin in the back alley of a restaurant when I saw him.
He was no more than three and a half feet tall, dressed in a crisp white shirt and blue denim pants.
His brown hair was cut in a neat style and his bright blue eyes were wide with fear and confusion as he looked around.
He had no idea where he was.
I could tell that he was lost.
I stopped what I was doing and stared at him through the wire mesh of the trash bin.
He looked so out of place in this part of town where crime and poverty ran rampant.
The streets were dirty, the buildings crumbling around us and the people even worse.
What was a little boy like him doing here?
As I watched, he started to cry.
I could hear the sounds of cars driving by on the road just a few feet away and knew that if he wandered out of the alley, he could be hit.
My heart went out to him.
I knew what it was like to be scared and alone.
I climbed out of the trash bin, brushing off the grime from my clothes, the smell of rotting food and decay lingering on my skin.
The boy's cries grew louder as I approached, his small frame trembling with each sob, his bright blue eyes red-rimmed from tears.
"Hey, it's okay," I said softly, kneeling beside him, trying to sound calmer than I felt.
He looked up, tears streaking his cheeks, and hesitated before reaching out a small hand.
I took it gently, feeling the warmth of his tiny fingers wrapping around mine, a spark of connection forming between us.
"Let's find your parents," I suggested, glancing around the alley for any sign of them, but all I saw were crumbling brick walls and rusty dumpsters.
He nodded, sniffling, and clung to my side as we walked towards the street, his small legs struggling to keep up with mine.
Together, we stepped into the bustling world beyond the alley, the sounds of car horns and chatter enveloping us like a wave.
The bright sunlight was a shock after the dimness of the alley, and I squinted, shielding my eyes with my free hand.
The boy looked up at me, his eyes wide with wonder, taking in the sights and sounds of the city.
I smiled down at him, trying to reassure him that everything would be okay.
As we walked, I noticed people passing by us, their faces a blur of indifference and curiosity.
No one seemed to be looking for a lost little boy in a crisp white shirt and blue denim pants.
I quickened our pace, my heart beating faster with every step, wondering what kind of parents would let their child wander off alone in a place like this.
Suddenly, the boy tugged on my hand, pointing down the street.
"Daddy!" he exclaimed, his voice trembling with excitement.
I followed his gaze, my eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on a tall figure in a tailored suit, his dark hair slicked back, his eyes scanning the crowd with an air of urgency.
The man spotted us and rushed over, his face a mix of relief and panic.
"Thank God, I've been looking everywhere for you!" he exclaimed, dropping to his knees to embrace the boy tightly.
The boy clung to him, tears of relief streaming down his face as he whispered, "I was so scared, Daddy."
As Nicolas embraced Dylan, I noticed shadows shifting in the alley.
The sunlight seemed to fade, replaced by an eerie gloom that sent a shiver down my spine.
A group of thugs emerged, their intentions clear and menacing.
Their eyes locked onto us, their faces twisted into cruel grins.
Nicolas grabbed Dylan's hand, and I followed as we sprinted through the bustling streets.
The sound of our footsteps echoed off the buildings, mingling with the cacophony of car horns and chatter.
We weaved through the crowd, dodging vendors and startled pedestrians who leapt out of our way.
My heart pounded with each turn, the city a blur around us as we desperately sought escape.
Nicolas led us into a narrow passageway, hoping to lose them in the labyrinthine alleys.
We paused to catch our breath, but the sound of approaching footsteps urged us onward.
Nicolas glanced at me, determination etched on his face, his eyes burning with a fierce intensity.
"We need to keep moving," he whispered, his voice low and urgent.
I nodded, my throat dry with fear as I scanned our surroundings.
The passageway was dark and narrow, the walls closing in around us like a trap.
I could feel the thugs closing in, their hot breath on our heels.
Suddenly, Nicolas yanked us to the side, pulling us into a small doorway just as the thugs burst into the passageway.
We held our breath, hidden in the shadows, as they thundered past, oblivious to our presence.
