"Simon 'Ghost' Riley."
He looks up from the tactical map spread out on the table in front of him.
His eyes narrow as they focus on me.
I can't read his expression; he's wearing a skull balaclava, and a pair of dark green glasses covers his eyes.
The balaclava and glasses are trimmed to fit snugly under his tactical vest.
A shoulder holster with a pistol on his left side and a pistol holster on his right hip complete his ensemble.
A black belt with a utility knife on his left hip and multiple pouches holding who knows what round out his gear.
He wears a dark green military jacket over everything, and his pants are tucked into his combat trousers.
The only exposed skin is his hands, which are covered in tactical gloves.
It's obvious he's prepared to go to war, and I'm not talking about the war we're currently fighting.
Operation Shadow Rise
I move closer to the table, my boots crunching on the debris covering the floor.
Ghost shifts his weight, keeping distance between us.
The map is of the city's eastern district.
There are red circles drawn around what looks like a series of buildings, and there are several notes written in a code I can't read.
Ghost's gloved finger traces a path through the narrow streets, pointing out several intersections.
He taps each one twice as he passes it.
His other hand rests on his hip, near his gun.
It's not an overt threat, but I know he could have it out and pointed at me before I could even react.
I lean forward over the table to get a better look at the markings on the map.
As I do, I hear gunfire in the distance, and I look up to see that one of the windows is broken out and hanging crookedly from its frame.
Operation Shadow Rise
Ghost reaches into his vest and pulls out a marker.
He draws a single, decisive line across the map, sealing our fate.
Ghost caps the marker and slides it into a vest pocket.
His movements are slow and deliberate, but I can tell he's in complete control of his body.
I trace the line with my finger.
It winds through narrow alleys and cuts across exposed squares, avoiding the heaviest fighting.
The path leads to what looks like a warehouse district.
When I glance up, Ghost has shifted his weight again, angling his body toward the door.
His hand is still resting near his sidearm.
Through the broken window, I can see smoke drifting across the broken buildings.
Gunfire is sporadic now, but I know it could pick up again at any moment.
I check my own weapon, making sure there's a round chambered.
