I am a 19-year-old Korean single father.
I have a five-year-old son.
My partner left me when I was pregnant, and I raised my son alone.
I work at a game center, and I also take care of my son.
Recently, I found out that I am pregnant again.
My life is about to get more complicated.
I am five weeks pregnant.
I have not told anyone yet, including my son and my friend Otto.
Otto is an 18-year-old Japanese boy living in Korea.
We went to the same high school, but we were rivals back then because we were both popular among the female students.
After graduating from high school, he went back to Japan.
He has come back to Korea again, and we are still close friends.
I need help taking care of my son now that I am pregnant.
I cannot think of anyone else to ask for help except for Otto.
I called him and asked him to meet me at the park where our children play.
When I arrived at the park, he was already there with his little brother.
"Yi-jun! Long time no see!"
He smiled and hugged me warmly.
"I’ve missed you so much!"
"I’ve missed you too, Otto. How was Japan?"
"It was good. My mom left my dad again, so I had to take care of my little brother. But I am glad to be back in Korea again."
We sat down on a park bench and watched as our kids played on the swings.
The autumn breeze blew through my hair, and I could feel the sun setting behind me.
Jiung was chasing Otto’s brother around the playground, laughing and shouting.
My hands trembled slightly as I gripped the edge of the bench.
I turned to Otto, who was still watching the kids play.
His profile was sharp against the setting sun, and his dark hair was blown back by the wind.
"Remember that night during our third year?"
I asked quietly.
Otto stiffened beside me, and I could hear his breath catch in his throat.
He kept watching the kids, but his knuckles were white as he gripped his knees.
"Of course I remember," he whispered.
"I think about it more than I should."
I fidget with the sleeve of my jacket, watching as our kids laugh and play on the swings.
The setting sun casts long shadows across the playground mulch, and I can feel the cool breeze blowing through my hair.
My heart pounds in my chest as memories flood back to me.
Stolen kisses behind the school gym, whispers in the dark, promises made under the stars.
I can still feel his lips on mine, his hands in my hair, his breath hot against my neck.
"Would you ever want back what we had?"
I ask quietly, keeping my eyes fixed on Jiung’s small form soaring through the air on the swings.
Otto's gaze finally breaks from the playground, meeting mine with a mixture of longing and uncertainty.
"I've thought about it," he admits, his voice barely above a whisper.
"But things are different now, Yi-jun... especially with everything you're going through."
I stare at my hands in my lap, processing his words.
The autumn breeze rustles through the trees, causing the leaves to dance around us.
Jiung's laughter echoes from the playground, mingling with the distant sounds of children playing and birds chirping.
Otto shifts closer on the bench, his shoulder brushing against mine.
"I wanted to ask you out so many times back then," he confesses, his voice filled with a mix of regret and longing.
"But I was scared."
I turn my head slightly, meeting his gaze.
"Scared of what?"
I ask softly, my voice barely audible over the sounds of the playground.
He sighs, his eyes dropping to his hands as he fidgets with them in his lap.
"I saw you at school one day, holding that positive pregnancy test," he admits quietly.
"I knew then it wasn't the right time."
My chest tightens at the memory of that day in the bathroom stall, seventeen and terrified as I stared at the two pink lines on the pregnancy test.
I had felt so alone, so scared of what lay ahead. I turn to face him fully now, wanting to explain everything that happened after that day.
But before I can say anything, Jiung comes running up to us, tugging on my sleeve excitedly.
"Dad, can we get ice cream?" Jiung asks, his eyes wide with anticipation.
I smile down at him, ruffling his hair. "Of course, buddy. Why don't you ask Otto and his brother if they want to join us?"
Otto glances at me, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "Ice cream sounds perfect," he says, standing up and calling out to his brother.
After getting ice cream, Otto offers to drive us home since it's getting dark.
I buckle Jiung into the backseat next to Otto's sleeping brother, then slide into the passenger seat.
At each red light, I catch Otto glancing at me, his expression soft in the glow of street lamps.
When we finally park outside my apartment, the boys are both asleep in the back.
In the quiet car, Otto reaches over and gently takes my hand.
His palm is warm against mine as he whispers that he's always loved me, even after all this time.
I look at him, my heart racing at his confession.
"Why didn't you ever say anything?" I ask, my voice trembling slightly.
Otto squeezes my hand gently, his eyes filled with a mixture of hope and regret.
Inside the brightly-lit ice cream shop, I watch as Jiung and Otto's brother debate over which flavors to get at the counter.
Otto and I sit at a small table nearby, waiting for them to make their decisions.
The fluorescent lights overhead cast shadows across Otto's face, making his eyes appear even more vibrant.
As we wait, Otto leans in closer to me, his shoulder brushing against mine.
I can feel the warmth of his body through our clothes, and it sends a shiver down my spine.
Being pregnant makes me hyper-aware of every sensation, and with Otto this close, it's almost overwhelming.
Jiung and his friend finally decide on their flavors and head towards the toppings bar.
As they excitedly pile sprinkles onto their ice cream cones, Otto turns to me with a smile.
"I'm so glad you agreed to meet up," he says quietly, his voice filled with genuine happiness. I nod in response, my heart pounding in my chest.
It feels surreal to be sitting here with Otto after all these years.
"Me too," I reply softly, my voice barely audible over the chatter of other customers in the shop.
Just as Otto opens his mouth to say something else, Jiung and his friend return with their ice cream cones.
They sit down across from us, their eyes wide with excitement as they begin licking their treats.
In that moment, I realize how much I've missed this—being surrounded by people who care about me and my child.
As we enjoy our ice cream together, I steal glances at Otto whenever I can.
His hair is longer now than it was back then, falling across his forehead in messy waves whenever he laughs or moves too quickly.
And those eyes... they still hold that same spark that drew me in all those years ago. As we finish up our ice cream cones, Otto reaches out and gently brushes a strand of hair behind my ear.
It's such a simple gesture, but it sends shivers down my spine all the same.
I look into his eyes, searching for any sign of uncertainty or doubt.
But all I see is genuine affection and longing staring back at me. "I really want to try again," he whispers softly, his breath hot against my skin.
"I know things are complicated right now with everything going on in your life. But I can't help how I feel."
My heart skips a beat at his words.
I want nothing more than to believe him—to trust that he won't disappear again like before.
"But what if it doesn't work out?" I ask, my voice tinged with both hope and fear.
Otto takes a deep breath, his eyes never leaving mine. "Then we'll face it together, Yi-jun," he replies, determination lacing his words.
"Whatever happens, I'm not going anywhere this time."
