Soul Hunter: The Second Order
Rebellion threatened to destroy the world, and chaos creatures roamed the land.
Only one group stood between humanity and destruction—Cybernetic Hunters.
The elite soldiers of the Cybernetic Hunter family Elena Nightshade led the charge against those who would defy them, protecting the remnants of civilization from annihilation.
Even as they waged war, the Hunters were divided.
Most of my peers chose to become Cybernetic Hunters, augmenting their bodies with cybernetic enhancements to become stronger, faster, and more effective on the battlefield.
I was not so sure—instead, I chose to remain a Soul Hunter.
The decision weighed on me, and my uncertain future loomed as I stood on the precipice of adulthood.
“Shu, we’re going to be late,” Kaito called out from the hallway.
I ran my fingers through my hair, damp from a quick shower.
The water had helped shake the last cobwebs from my mind after a long night of brooding.
It didn’t help that I’d had a nightmare about these very thoughts.
I shook my head to clear it and slipped into my uniform before checking myself in the mirror.
The uniform was made of lightweight material that allowed me full range of motion without restricting me.
It was also black, like my hair, and had a hood that I’d learned was useful for blending into the background when necessary.
The material was supposed to be fire-resistant too, but I hadn’t had an opportunity yet to test that out.
Satisfied that I looked presentable, I left the room to join my best friend in the hallway.
Kaito had been with me since we were kids in the orphanage, and was a full head shorter than me.
He had spiky brown hair and chocolate brown eyes that sparkled with curiosity.
He’d been talking about how glad he was to leave the orphanage behind ever since he’d learned we were both being adopted by the Nightshade family.
We’d been inseparable ever since we were matched to be roommates in our new home.
“Do you think they’re going to tell us today?”
I shook my head, the question snapping me out of my thoughts.
“I don’t think so.I think we have another year or two before we can be adopted into the family.”
Kaito’s eyes clouded with concern.
“I thought you wanted to be part of the Nightshade family?Isn’t that why you chose Elena as your last name?”
I’d been born Shu Takahashi, but when I was adopted into the Nightshade family, I’d chosen their last name as my own to show my loyalty to them.
Elena was an unusual woman, and I admired her strength, so I’d also chosen her first name as my own.
I thought it would help me feel more like part of the family and less like an outsider, but so far, it hadn’t worked.
Still, I had hope that it would someday, even if I didn’t want to admit that to Kaito just yet.
“I do,” I said finally.
I wasn’t sure if I was telling him the truth or not, but I supposed time would tell.
“Let’s go.” I clapped Kaito on the shoulder and we headed out to meet our squad for our patrol.
We made it halfway through our patrol before we encountered our first chaos creature of the day.
A small, furry creature darted out from behind a building and lunged at me with bared fangs.
