Jennifer

She is a young girl undergoing a dental procedure. She is scared, tearful, and anxious. She feels trapped and scared as the nurse puts a mask over her face, making her gasp for air. Jennifer feels a sense of dread as she looks at her sisters, Rachael and Racheal. She struggles against the mask as the anesthesia takes effect, causing her to lose consciousness.

Doctor or Dentist

He is the doctor overseeing the dental procedure for Jennifer and her sisters. He is authoritative, detached, and professional. The doctor monitors the anesthesia levels for each girl but shows little emotional involvement in their plight beyond ensuring the procedure continues smoothly. He remains focused on completing the treatment despite the girls' distress.

Rachael

She is Jennifer's older sister by about six years. She is calm, composed, and distant. Rachael shows little concern for Jennifer's plight despite being in a similar situation. Her gas is turned up higher than Jennifer's, showing her apparent desire to escape the painful procedure quickly. Rachael's expression changes from concern for Jennifer to a more relaxed state as the anesthesia affects her.

Three little children in three little chairs, all facing each other in a triangle formation.
Each one of us is wearing a black rubber anesthesia mask, with a black rubber corrugated tube connecting to a small compact anesthesia machine.
The anesthesia machine has a vaporizer half full of bubbling liquid with the word "ether" on it, mounted above a gas cylinder.
The gas cylinder is connected to a green manual resuscitation bag.
The first little girl, Rachael, who is about six years older than me, has just had the nurse put the silicone anesthesia mask over her nose and mouth.
She is crying but is trying to be brave in front of me.
She glances at me and then looks away, trying not to let me see her tears.
The second little girl, Hanna, who is about two years older than me, also has a black anesthesia mask covering her nose and mouth.
The nurse turned up her gas to about 50%, and she is already starting to droop, with her eyes mostly closed and her head tilted back.
The third little girl is me, Jennifer, and I am scared.
I don’t want to have this dental work done!
I want my mommy!
The nurse just placed the black rubber anesthesia mask over my nose and mouth, and I am gasping for air.
I can’t breathe!
I am panicking!
Oh my gosh… I can’t catch my breath!
I tried to pull the mask off my face, but it is held in place by a strap around my forehead.
The Last Doll
I thrash my head around, trying to get the mask off.
The nurse just turned up the gas on my machine, and I can smell the sweet chemical smell of the ether filling my nose.
My heart is pounding in my chest, and I can feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins.
I can see the nurse through the foggy plastic of my mask, turning dials on Hanna’s anesthesia machine.
My muffled screams are barely audible through the tight seal of the mask over my nose and mouth.
Rachael’s eyes flicker open at the commotion I am making, but she is too far gone to help me.
She stares at me with a blank expression on her face, her eyes unfocused and glassy.
The nurse walks over to me and places her hand on my shoulder.
I can feel her hand through my thin cotton gown, but it doesn’t comfort me. "Don’t worry, Jennifer," she says in a soothing voice.
"Just breathe deeply into your mask."
The Last Doll
I shake my head back and forth violently, trying to dislodge the mask from my face.
"Please stop!" I beg, but all that comes out is "Pleeease stoooopppp…"
The nurse just turns a dial on my anesthesia machine, increasing my gas flow even more.
Rachael's voice, barely a whisper, cuts through the haze. "Jennifer, it's okay... just think of the beach we went to last summer."
Hanna, her voice slurred but determined, adds, "Yeah, remember the sandcastles we built? We'll do it again when this is over."
The Last Doll
The nurse pauses, her hand hovering over the dial, and for a moment, I think I see a flicker of doubt in her eyes.
I force myself to think of happier times as the sickly-sweet gas fills my lungs.
The beach last summer, building sandcastles with Rachael and Hanna.
But the rubber mask pressing against my face keeps yanking me back to reality.
I try focusing on Rachael across from me, but her head lolls to the side, eyes fluttering.
The nurse turns a dial and the gas flows stronger.
My arms feel heavy now, the leather straps digging into my wrists as I give one last weak tug.
The room starts spinning slowly, like a merry-go-round.
Rachael's voice, barely a whisper, cuts through the haze. "Jennifer, it's okay... just think of the beach we went to last summer."
Hanna, her voice slurred but determined, adds, "Yeah, remember the sandcastles we built? We'll do it again when this is over."
The nurse pauses, her hand hovering over the dial, and for a moment, I think I see a flicker of doubt in her eyes.
