I couldn’t help but smile and shake my head.
Max had a way of making everything seem like an adventure, even if it was just a trip to the grocery store.
It was one of the things I loved most about him, and also one of the things that drove me the most insane.
"Okay, but what if it breaks down in the middle of nowhere?" I asked.
"What are we supposed to do then?"
He flashed me another one of his signature grins, one that never failed to make my heart race.
"Then we’ll figure it out," he said.
"We always do."
I rolled my eyes and looked out the window as Max turned up the street and pulled into my driveway.
The rest of my friends were already waiting for us, sitting on the front steps with their backpacks at their feet.
Lily Chen, our other best friend, had a small bag slung over her shoulder, her petite frame standing in stark contrast to Max’s tall, muscular build.
I’d known Lily for almost as long as I’d known Max, and she was like a sister to me.
Max Carter grinned at me from behind the wheel, his long fingers tapping on the steering wheel.
He was tall and lanky with messy blonde hair that always looked like he’d just rolled out of bed.
He was also one of my best friends, which is why I’d agreed to go on this trip in the first place.
That and the fact that I had nothing better to do this summer.
"Of course I’m sure," he said. "This baby’s got another hundred thousand miles left in her."
I raised an eyebrow at him.
The van was older than both of us combined, and there was no way it had a hundred thousand miles left in it.
But Max didn’t seem too concerned as he turned up the volume on the radio and leaned back in his seat.
He was always so carefree, so impulsive, so . . . Max.
