Michał Michałowski
He is a novice alchemist at the Burning Dawn Academy. He is determined, curious, and humble. Michał aspires to become a renowned alchemist despite being a late starter, learning from fellow students who are also beginners. He faces challenges in creating a decent potion and struggles with the harsh comments of other students. Despite setbacks, he remains focused on achieving his goal of becoming a skilled alchemist.
Klaudia
She is a student at the Burning Dawn Academy and part of Michał's social circle. She is confident, blunt, and sometimes critical. Klaudia often notices the flaws in Michał's work before anyone else and points them out. Although her feedback can be harsh, it helps Michał recognize areas for improvement. Her presence in the group keeps Michał on his toes as he strives to meet her high expectations for his experiments.
Piotr
He is a student at the Burning Dawn Academy and Michał's classmate. He is ambitious, competitive, and blunt. Piotr is also trying to become an accomplished alchemist, often competing with Michał in experiments and assessments. While his harsh words sometimes discourage Michał, Piotr's ambition drives him to work harder, creating a friendly rivalry that pushes Michał to persevere in his pursuit of alchemical knowledge.
I want to be a great alchemist.
I know it’s not an easy path, and I started later than most people.
My parents didn’t want me to become an alchemist, so I only began learning the basics two years ago.
Still, I don’t want to give up on my dream.
I’m going to make it happen.
That’s why I’m at the Burning Dawn Academy, even though I know I’m not as good as the other students here.
I’m a novice, after all, and many of the students have been learning alchemy since they were children.
My neighbor in the dorms, Zosia, is one of them.
She’s two years younger than me and already knows more about alchemy than I do.
She’s also very nice and helpful, which makes it easier for me to ask her questions when I don’t understand something.
"Come on," she says.
"Let’s go to class. We’re going to learn how to make a strengthening potion today."
"I know this one," says Piotr, another student in our class.
He doesn’t look at me as he says it, but I know it’s meant for my ears.
He wants to show off how much better he is at alchemy than I am.
Well… maybe he is.
But that doesn’t mean I won’t try my best.
"Okay," our teacher says when we arrive at class.
"I want you all to make a strengthening potion. You know the recipe, and I’ll be here if you have any questions. Just let me know."
I finish cleaning my workstation after another failed attempt at the strengthening potion.
My neighbor is already gone, but I’m not in a hurry to leave.
The classroom is still noisy with the chatter of students finishing their work.
I don’t mind the noise.
I’m used to it.
"Silence!"
A voice cuts through the chatter, sharp and aristocratic.
Everyone turns to look at the doorway, where a man stands, looking at us with an expression of distaste.
He’s tall and slender, with dark hair and eyes that are almost black.
He’s dressed in expensive robes that are embroidered with intricate patterns of gold and silver.
He looks like he doesn’t belong here, like he should be in a fancy restaurant or something.
But he’s not here to eat.
He’s here for something else.
"Who are you?"
Our teacher asks, looking at the man with confusion.
"I am Wilhelm Hamar," the man says.
"I am the overseer of this academy."
"Oh," our teacher says, looking surprised.
"I didn’t know you were coming today."
"I wasn’t planning on it," Wilhelm Hamar says.
"But I had to come. I have some business to attend to."
"What kind of business?"
Our teacher asks. "That’s none of your concern," Wilhelm Hamar says.
"Now, I need you all to leave. I have some important things to discuss with your teacher."
The students start leaving the classroom, but I stay behind.
I’m not finished cleaning my workstation yet, and I don’t want to leave until it’s spotless.
Wilhelm Hamar looks at me with irritation as I wipe down my workstation with a cloth.
"Can you please hurry up?" he asks me impatiently.
"I’m almost done," I say, not looking up at him.
"Just give me a minute."
"Fine," he says, turning away from me and talking to our teacher in a low voice.
I finish cleaning my workstation and start putting my things away when I notice someone else standing in the doorway of the classroom.
He’s a tall man with broad shoulders and jet-black hair that falls to his shoulders in loose waves.
"Father," the man in the doorway says, his voice deep and resonant.
Wilhelm Hamar turns sharply, surprise flashing across his face.
"What are you doing here, Elias?" he asks, his tone a mix of annoyance and concern.
"I just wanted to see how things are going here," the man says, his eyes scanning the empty classroom.
He walks between the rows of desks, his long legs eating up the distance.
He stops in front of a workstation and looks at the equipment and half-empty bottles scattered across it with obvious distaste.
He picks up a bottle and examines it, then puts it down with a shake of his head.
"Pathetic," he mutters.
I watch him as he moves around the room, my hands shaking slightly as I put away my things.
I don’t know why I’m so nervous.
I’ve never met him before, but there’s something about him that makes me feel like he’s looking right through me.
He stops in front of my workstation and looks at me with a frown.
"What are you doing here?" he asks me, his voice cold and commanding.
"I’m just finishing up my work," I say, trying to keep my voice steady. He looks at me for a moment longer, then picks up the bottle of strengthening potion that I made earlier.
It’s still warm from the burner, and it sloshes around in the bottle as he swirls it in his hand.
"Another waste of ingredients," he says, placing the bottle back on my desk with more force than necessary.
The impact causes the other bottles on my desk to rattle, and one of them starts to glow with a faint blue light.
Elias's eyes narrow as he notices the glowing bottle.
"Interesting," he says, his tone shifting from disdain to curiosity.
Wilhelm steps closer, glancing at the bottle with a mix of caution and intrigue. "What have you done here?" he asks, directing his question at me with unexpected intensity.
