When I was 19, I tried online dating.
I had just been rejected by the guy I had been crushing on, and my heart was broken.
I decided to try and see what happened, so I made a profile and waited.
A week later, I got a message from a guy named Yi-jun.
He was 1 week pregnant, and his profile picture was him holding his stomach with a big smile on his face.
His bio said he was looking for someone who would be there for him throughout his pregnancy.
I thought it was weird, but I decided to give it a shot.
I messaged him and waited.
A few hours later, he messaged me back.
He told me that he was the son of a woman who had made him an account on this site.
She was worried about him because he was 1 week pregnant and didn’t have anyone to take care of him.
He said he was excited to meet me and hoped that we would fall in love.
I didn’t know what to say, so I just told him that I was excited to meet him too.
We talked for a little while longer, and then we exchanged numbers.
The next day, Yi-jun sent me a picture of himself holding a onesie and a baby book.
My Virtual Boyfriend
"I can’t wait to meet my baby," he said.
I smiled and told him that I couldn’t wait to meet his baby either.
We talked for a little while longer, and then we decided to meet up.
I was nervous, but I was also excited.
I had never been on a date before, and I didn’t know what to expect.
Yi-jun picked me up from my apartment and took me to a restaurant.
We sat down at a table and started talking.
He was really nice, and we had a lot in common.
We talked for a while, and then he asked me if I wanted to go back to his place.
I said yes, and we left the restaurant.
My Virtual Boyfriend
When we got to his apartment, he showed me around and introduced me to his cat.
We sat down on the couch, and he started telling me about his pregnancy. He said that it had been really hard, but that he was happy to be having a baby.
He showed me the onesie again and told me that he had picked it out himself.
I smiled and told him that it was really cute.
He smiled back and said that he couldn’t wait for me to meet his baby.
We talked for a little while longer, and then he asked me if I wanted to watch a movie with him.
I said yes, and we picked out a movie to watch.
We sat on the couch together and watched the movie.
When it was over, Yi-jun asked me if I wanted to stay the night with him.
I said yes, and we went into his bedroom.
He took off his shirt and pants, and I saw that he was wearing a belly band around his stomach.
He told me that it helped him feel more comfortable when he was sleeping. We got into bed together, and Yi-jun put his arms around me.
He kissed me on the cheek and told me that he was really happy that I had come over tonight.
I smiled and told him that I was happy too.
We fell asleep together, holding each other tightly in our arms.
My Virtual Boyfriend
The next morning, Yi-jun woke up early so he could get ready for work.
He gave me a kiss on the cheek before leaving for work, saying he would see me later tonight after work so we could have dinner together again before bed.
I sit at my kitchen table, staring at the text on my phone.
It’s from Linda, and it reads: "I have some news about Yi-jun."
My hands shake as I read the words.
I can’t believe that she would send me a message like this.
I haven’t heard from her in years, and now she’s telling me that she has some news about Yi-jun?
I don’t know what to say, so I just stare at the screen for a few minutes before responding.
"Okay," I type.
"What is it?"
Linda sends me another text a few minutes later.
"He has a daughter," she writes.
My Virtual Boyfriend
"She’s eight years old now."
I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut.
Yi-jun had a daughter?
How could I not have known about this?
We were together for so long, and he never mentioned anything about having a child. I think back to the last time we saw each other.
It was the night before he died, and we were lying in bed together.
He had his arms around me, and we were talking about our future.
He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, and I said that I felt the same way about him.
Then he fell asleep, and I stayed awake for a while longer, watching him sleep.
The next morning, he woke up early and got ready for work.
He kissed me goodbye and left the apartment, saying that he would see me later that night after work so we could have dinner together again before bed. But he never came home that night.
Instead, Linda showed up at my door with tears in her eyes and told me that Yi-jun had been in an accident on his way home from work.
He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors tried to save him but ultimately couldn’t.
And then she told me that he was pregnant when he died, but they were able to save the baby during emergency surgery after the crash, even as Yi-jun slipped into his coma. I didn’t know what to say or do after hearing this news.
I just sat there on my couch with tears streaming down my face as Linda hugged me tightly in her arms. Now here we are, years later, and Linda is sending me messages about Yi-jun’s daughter?
My Virtual Boyfriend
It doesn’t make any sense!
Why would she do this to me?
Doesn’t she know how much pain it causes me every time someone mentions his name?
I stare at the screen for a few minutes, trying to figure out what to say next.
But before I can type anything, Linda sends me another message.
"He was 1 week pregnant when you first met him," she writes.
"Did you know that?"
My heart stops beating for a second as I read those words.
Yi-jun was 1 week pregnant when we first met?
How could that be possible?
We had been together for almost a year before he died, and he never got pregnant during that time.
So how could he have been 1 week pregnant when we first met?
I think back to our first conversation on the dating app.
My Virtual Boyfriend
He had mentioned being 1 week pregnant then, hadn’t he?
I remember seeing it in his profile picture and bio, but I had dismissed it as a joke.
But now I realize that it wasn’t a joke at all!
He really was 1 week pregnant when we first met! My hands shake as I pull up our old chat logs from my saved screenshots.
There it is: his profile clearly stating "1 week pregnant."
I scroll through our early messages, remembering how he showed me the baby items he’d already started collecting.
The ultrasound photo he sent me that first month takes on new meaning now.
I grab my phone and type a message to Linda: "The baby... it was conceived before we met, wasn't it?"
Linda's reply comes almost instantly: "Yes, it was. He didn't know how to tell you."
I feel a mix of relief and confusion as I type back, "Why didn't he ever say anything?"
My Virtual Boyfriend
"He was scared you'd leave him," Linda responds, "He loved you too much to risk it."
