It was a dark and stormy night, the kind of night that made you not want to go out or even look at the window, the kind of night that made you want to stay in bed and sleep.
But I wasn’t sleeping.
I was wide awake looking through some old pictures on my computer.
I came across a picture that caught my attention; it was an old picture of me and Eva, my girlfriend.
We had been together for two years now, but we had known each other for almost four years.
We had met in school, but we started dating secretly because I hadn’t told my family about her.
I liked her from the moment I met her, but I had been too much of a coward to tell her.
The first time I actually worked up the courage to approach her was when we were given a group project.
I remember her smiling at me and saying she was good with the project we were doing, so we could finish faster at her place.
I remember walking her home after that and asking if she lived alone.
She had looked at me funny with a question, ‘Why would you ask that?’
I had told her I just wanted to know, but deep down I wanted to know if she was human or not.

I sat at my desk with the glow of my computer monitor lighting up my face.
I typed "signs of vampirism" into the search bar and pressed enter.
The search results came up quickly, and I clicked on the first link.
My hands shook a little as I scrolled through the website reading through the different signs.
Some of them were weird, but some of them sounded like Eva.
She didn’t like to eat during our lunch dates.
I had always thought that was weird, but I figured she was just watching her figure.
She had always been a little strange around mirrors; she didn’t have any in her apartment except for one in the bathroom.
I remembered the time last month when I had gone to her apartment and seen her staring at herself in the mirror before she realized I was behind her.
She had jumped and hissed at me before she realized it was only me.
My Vampire Girlfriend
I remembered the time we went to my mother’s house for dinner and she had hissed at a crucifix hanging on the wall. The next link said that vampires had an aversion to holy objects, garlic, running water, and silver.
They also couldn’t be seen in mirrors; they had no reflection, they were stronger than a human, they could transform into animals, and they needed blood to survive.
That’s when it hit me; Eva was a vampire.
A notification popped up on my screen: "Eva: Are you free tonight?"
I stared at her message for a minute before minimizing the browser window and staring at the picture of us on my desktop screen again.
My Vampire Girlfriend
Instead of answering her text message, I opened up a new tab and typed "ways to protect yourself against vampires."
My phone buzzed on the desk, and Eva's name flashed across the screen.
"Hey, are you ignoring me?" her voice came through, light but with an edge of concern.
"No, I just... I need to ask you something important," I replied, my voice trembling slightly as I glanced at the search results still open on my computer.
There was a pause on the line before she spoke again.
"I'm listening," her voice was cold now, like the wind outside.
A loud crack of thunder rumbled outside my second-story window, and the lights in my room flickered.
I gripped the phone tighter in my hand as I looked at the darkening sky.
"You're not human, are you?"
I blurted out, unable to keep the question to myself any longer.
"What? Of course I am! What are you talking about?" she replied, a hint of annoyance in her voice.
"I've been noticing things about you that aren't normal for a human. You don't eat, you can't stand holy objects or mirrors. You're stronger than me... and you hate garlic."
I trailed off, realizing how ridiculous it sounded.
There was a laugh on the other end of the line, but it was hollow and didn't sound like her.

"Daniel, I think you've been watching too many movies. I'll talk to you later; I have to go," she said quickly before the line went dead.
My bedroom grew darker as storm clouds blocked out what little moonlight there was.
The air cooled rapidly, and I could see my breath misting in front of me. There was a tapping sound on my window, and I turned slowly toward it.
A pair of glowing eyes stared back at me through the glass.
