Mohamed Abdi
He is a 15yearold high school student in Los Angeles. He is resilient, rebellious, and protective. Mohamed moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles with his mother, Layla, to escape danger in the hood. He struggles with the loss of his father at a young age and grapples with his mother's new lifestyle. Mohamed finds himself in a complicated dynamic with his cousin Rachel, who he has crush on, and his best friend Andre. He navigates high school dynamics while dealing with family expectations and personal identity.
Ahmed Abdi
He is Mohamed's uncle and a 42yearold successful businessman in Los Angeles. He is authoritative, stern, and enigmatic. Ahmed provides Mohamed and his family a home despite his harsh demeanor. He is deeply involved in his business and rarely engages with the family except for important events. His wife Olivia helps bridge the gap between him and his nephew Mohamed. Ahmed’s presence looms over the family dynamics, creating both tension and stability.
Andre Abdi
He is Mohamed's best friend and cousin within the same age group. He is laidback, humorous, and loyal. Andre provides Mohamed with comfort and companionship at school, often helping him navigate social dynamics away from home. He shares a close bond with Mohamed despite which girl he likes having been told by multiple girls that they liked him. Andre offers Mohamed an escape from high school drama while providing support during family gatherings.
It was the year 2016, and I was 15 years old.
My name is Mohamed Abdi, and I'm from New York City, Brooklyn—where it's all violence, gangs, drugs, and hood life.
My dad, Abdinur Abdi—he's dark-skinned and forty years old—left me when I was four years old.
He was a bad father who didn't care about me or my mom.
My mom, Layla Abdi—dark-skinned and thirty-nine years old—tried her best to take care of me.
I was in a fight with a guy who threatened to kill me, so my mom moved me from Brooklyn to Los Angeles to get a better life and stay away from gangs, drug dealing, and fighting.
I moved in with my uncle Ahmed Abdi, who's forty-two years old and dark-skinned.
He's a ruthless businessman in Los Angeles.
He has a wife named Olivia Abdi, who's thirty-eight years old and dark-skinned.
They have three kids: Rachel Abdi—a daughter who's eighteen years old and dark-skinned—Andre Abdi—a son who's sixteen years old and dark-skinned—and Malia Abdi—a daughter who's fourteen years old and dark-skinned.
They're all my cousins.
My uncle Ahmed doesn't really like to talk; he's not really a good person.
I stepped out of the limousine with my bags in my hand.
I saw a big house, which was my uncle's mansion.
The butler, Darius Williams, who's forty-five years old and dark-skinned, came out and greeted me.
"Hello, Mohamed, I'm Darius Williams. I'm the butler of this house."
I shook his hand.
"Hello, Darius, I'm Mohamed Abdi. I'm the nephew of Ahmed Abdi."
He took my bags and said, "Follow me."
He took me inside the house.
My cousins Rachel, Andre, and Malia came out to greet me.
"Hey, what's up, Mohamed? I'm Rachel," said Rachel.
"I'm Andre," said Andre.
"I'm Malia," said Malia.
We all shook hands and hugged each other.
They took me on a tour around the house.
The house is huge with a lot of rooms.
It has a pool and a garden outside the house.
The pool is very big with a hot tub next to it.
The garden is very beautiful with flowers everywhere.
Inside the house, there is a living room with a big TV and couches everywhere.
There is a kitchen with new appliances and utensils everywhere.
There is also a gym and sauna room next to the pool. The gym has new equipment like weights and machines to work out on.
The sauna room is very hot with seats everywhere for people to sit on while they sweat out their body fat.
My cousins showed me the liquor cabinet that has all kinds of alcohol in it, but it was locked because Uncle Ahmed doesn't want anyone drinking his alcohol without permission.
We went upstairs, and they showed me my new bedroom.
It's a big room with a huge bed and a large TV on the wall.
There is also a PlayStation 4 and a bunch of video games next to it.
Andre said, "This is for you, Mohamed. You can play whenever you want."
I thanked him.
Rachel said, "We have Wi-Fi in the house. You can use your phone to access it."
I said, "Okay."
Malia opened the balcony door and said, "You can go outside if you want."
I looked outside, and I saw the garden.
It's very beautiful.
My cousins took me to the attached bathroom.
It has new clothes and shoes for me to wear.
They also have my school uniform for Bel Air Academy.
Andre said, "Bel Air Academy is an all-white school, but it has other races too."
I stood in my new bedroom and started taking the clothes out of my duffel bag.
I placed them on the silk hangers in the walk-in closet.
The silk hangers felt strange to me; back home, I used wire hangers.
Andre was sitting on my king-sized bed, watching me unpack.
He said, "The teachers at Bel Air Academy are very strict. They don't tolerate any nonsense."
I nodded and continued unpacking.
Through the large window, I could see the palm trees swaying gently in the LA breeze.
It was a stark contrast to Brooklyn's concrete jungle.
I took out my few sneakers and placed them beside the built-in shoe rack in the closet.
Andre said, "You should get more shoes. You can't wear the same ones every day."
I shrugged and continued unpacking.
Suddenly, Rachel appeared in the doorway with fresh towels in her hand.
She smiled at me and set the towels on my dresser.
As she walked past me, she deliberately brushed her body against mine.
I realized then that this new life would be anything but simple.
