My mother, Li Lan, was 31 years old.
She was the only one at home who took care of me and my 18-year-old sister, Chen Xue.
My father was always on business trips and seldom came home.
Even so, he earned a high salary, and every now and then he would send some money back to us.
I had just finished my lessons for the day and was walking back home from school.
On my way there, I had to pass by the school's toilet.
As I walked past it, I saw something unusual on the ground.
Curious, I picked it up and examined it.
To my surprise, it was a fleshy toy!

The dresser drawer seemed too obvious, and hiding it under the mattress would be too risky.
Finally, I spotted an old shoebox where I kept my collection of marbles.
I opened the lid and buried the toy beneath the marbles.
Just as I finished, Chen Xue knocked on my door and entered without waiting for a response.
"Hey, what was that you were hiding?" she asked, her eyes narrowing suspiciously.
I hesitated, then blurted out, "It's just a... new marble I found, really unusual."
After hiding the toy, I sat nervously on my bed, hands still trembling from the close call.
Chen Xue leaned against the doorframe, her eyes lingering on the marble box before scanning my room.
The afternoon sun cast long shadows through my window as she stepped inside, settling onto my desk chair.
She spun it around to face me, her casual demeanor making me even more anxious.
I gripped the bedsheets tightly, expecting more questions about my suspicious behavior.
Instead, she pulled out her phone and started scrolling through something.
"Hey, have you seen that new action movie that just came out?"
She asked, not looking up from her phone.
"I was thinking of going to watch it this weekend."
I nodded slowly, still trying to process what was happening.
"Yeah, I've heard about it. Isn't it that one with the cool car chases?"
She smiled, finally looking up from her phone.
"Exactly! And it's not just about car chases. The plot is really interesting too."
While we were discussing the movie, Chen Xue suddenly stood up and walked towards my marble collection box.
My heart skipped a beat as she picked it up and started shaking it, the marbles rattling inside.
I sat frozen, watching her fingers tracing the edges of the box as she continued to describe the plot of the movie.
She then set it back down but didn't return to her seat.
Instead, she lingered by my desk, picking up some of my scattered homework papers and organizing them neatly.
I pretended to be engrossed in my phone, but my eyes kept darting to the marble box.
It was as if I could still feel its weight on my desk, even though it was just a collection of marbles now.
When Chen Xue finally left my room, I immediately got up and checked the box again.
The toy was still there, hidden beneath the marbles, but I knew this secret wouldn't stay buried for long.
