The house was quiet and still as I lounged on the couch watching TV.
It was nice to have some alone time for a change.
My sister Jess, and my parents had gone to visit my aunt and uncle, so I had the whole house to myself.
I didn’t realize how much I enjoyed alone time until I got it.
I flipped through channels, not really paying attention to what was on.
I was about to get up and check out a movie when I heard the front door open and close.
I looked up, wondering who it could be since I knew my family wasn’t back yet.
I didn’t have any friends over since I had just gotten back from hanging with them at the park.
"Jaclynn?"
I called out when she walked in front of the TV, blocking my view.
She was dressed in a white t-shirt and little shorts that showed off her tan.
I couldn’t help but stare for a minute before I remembered to speak.
"Uh, hey."
She turned around with a smirk on her face.
"Hey," she said, leaning against the TV stand.
"Why didn’t you invite me over while your sister and parents were away?"
She pouted, crossing her arms across her chest.
I shrugged, feeling a little guilty even though it wasn’t right to pout at me.
"I just got back from hanging with my friends, and I didn’t really think about it."
"You were just going to watch TV by yourself?"
She raised an eyebrow.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
I shifted on the couch, making room for her.
"Come sit down. I can watch whatever you want."
I didn’t really care what was on.
She looked at me for a minute, then walked over to the couch.
Her fingers trailed along the back of the couch as she walked around it, sinking into the cushions.
The leather creaked as she sat down, closer than I expected.
Her bare knee brushed against my leg as she settled in.
The TV droned in the background while I pretended to be interested in channel surfing.
She leaned back, her shoulder touching mine.
I could smell her coconut shampoo and feel her warm breath on my neck.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
She reached for the remote, her fingers grazing mine as she took it from my hand.
She didn’t pull away though, so I didn’t either.
Her fingers brushed against my palm, and I could feel her warm skin through the thin remote.
I felt a little jolt run through my arm when she touched me.
She scrolled through the Netflix options, her finger hovering over each choice for a few seconds.
When she stopped on The Notebook, I looked up at her.
She leaned in closer, her face inches from mine as she read the description.
The soft glow of the TV cast shadows on her face as she moved her finger back and forth between The Notebook and another movie.
"Want to watch The Notebook?"
I asked, raising an eyebrow at her movie choice.
It was definitely a chick flick.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
I would have picked the action movie myself, but it was her choice, so I let it be. She nodded, clicking The Notebook on the remote and leaning back into the couch cushions.
She pulled her legs up onto the couch and tucked them under herself, making room for me to move over a bit.
She leaned forward again to start the movie then settled into the couch once more, this time placing her head on my shoulder.
I sat there for a few minutes unsure what to do with my arms.
I finally relaxed, letting my arm drape around her shoulder as the movie began.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
The opening scenes of the movie played on the screen, but I didn’t pay attention.
I was too focused on the girl leaning against me.
Her breathing was slow and rhythmic as she watched the movie, her body weight settling more heavily against my side as she relaxed.
Her curly blonde hair tickled my neck, and I could smell her coconut shampoo wafting up to me.
My arm was still draped over her shoulder, and it was starting to tingle from being in the same position for so long.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
I didn’t dare move it though.
I didn’t want to disturb her.
Instead, I tested the waters by giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze.
"My favorite part is coming up," she whispered, her breath tickling my neck.
I looked down at her face, illuminated by the TV screen.
Her eyes were still on the movie, but I could see her lips curling into a smile.
Her fingers traced patterns on my chest as she mouthed the words along with the movie.
It was an intimate gesture that made my heart race, but I didn’t want to disturb her.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
She shifted position slightly, pressing herself more firmly against my side.
She was completely absorbed in the movie, but I couldn’t focus.
I was too busy thinking about her and why she was being so affectionate with me.
I had never seen her act this way before, and I didn’t know what to make of it.
The movie continued, and she remained engrossed.
I glanced down at her purse on the floor beside the couch.
It was a small bag, black leather with gold hardware, and it was lying on its side.
I could see the edge of a wallet peeking out from the top of the purse.
I wondered what other secrets it held.
My mind raced as I thought about all the things that could be inside her purse.
Was she hiding something?
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
Why did she really come over?
Why was she being so affectionate?
I felt a pang of guilt for even wondering these things about my sister’s friend.
But then again, I couldn’t help it.
I was curious. The movie reached an emotional scene, and Jaclynn sniffled next to me.
She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand as she watched the characters on screen cry.
She pulled away from me slightly as she stood up from the couch.
"I’m going to grab some tissues," she said, gesturing toward the bathroom.
She walked across the room and into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her.
I heard water running from inside, and I took my chance.
I slid off the couch and onto my knees next to her purse.
My hands were shaking as I reached for the zipper on her purse.
I hesitated for a moment before pulling it open.
The main compartment of her purse was small, but there were several pockets along the sides that would hold tiny items like makeup or jewelry.
I flipped open one of those pockets first, finding only a lip gloss and a few gum wrappers inside. The bathroom door creaked open, and I froze with my hand in Jaclynn’s purse.
The water kept running from inside, so I knew she hadn’t come out yet.
I let out a breath and continued searching through her purse.
Next, I moved to a larger pocket along the front of her purse that stretched across its width.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Jaclynn's voice startled me from the bathroom doorway.
I quickly zipped her purse shut, trying to play it cool.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
"I was just... making sure you hadn't dropped anything important," I stammered, feeling my face flush with guilt.
I stood up from the floor, stumbling backward as I tripped over my own feet.
Jaclynn was standing in the doorway to the bathroom, her arms crossed over her chest and a scowl on her face.
The playful girl who had been snuggled up next to me on the couch was gone, replaced by a sharp-tongued stranger.
"What are you doing?" she demanded, her voice cold and angry.
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out.
My hands were clammy as I tried to think of an explanation.
"I thought... maybe something fell out," I said weakly.
Jaclynn took a step closer to me, narrowing her eyes.
"Really? Because it looks like you were going through my things."
Her voice was heavy with disappointment, and I felt my stomach twist with guilt.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
I stared down at the floor, unable to meet her gaze.
"I... I'm sorry," I mumbled, feeling my face heat with shame.
Jaclynn sighed and walked over to the couch.
She plopped down in front of me, sitting cross-legged on the carpet.
"Look, I get it. I've been acting different tonight," she said, pulling her purse onto her lap.
Her anger seemed to dissipate as she unzipped the main compartment of her purse.
"You could have just asked instead of snooping."
She dumped out the contents of her purse onto the floor in front of me.
Makeup, her wallet, a small notebook, and some crumpled receipts spilled out onto the carpet.
There was nothing suspicious or revealing among her things.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
I picked up the notebook, flipping through its pages.
They were all blank except for a few scribbled notes here and there.
Jaclynn reached out and gently took the notebook from me.
"That's private," she said with a small smile.
She closed the notebook and looked at me, her eyes softening as she whispered, "Next time, just ask."
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
She scooped up the rest of her things and stuffed them back into her purse.
She tucked the notebook into a side pocket before zipping it shut.
I watched as she sat on the floor in front of me, her knees bent and her feet tucked under her.
She reached out and took my hand in hers, intertwining our fingers.
The movie continued to play in the background, but neither of us was paying attention to it anymore.
Jaclynn looked up at me with a serious expression, her eyes boring into mine.
I felt my heart race as she leaned in closer to me, tilting her head slightly to the side.
She reached up with her free hand and touched my cheek, her thumb brushing against my stubble.
I held perfectly still, barely breathing as she moved in closer.
"There's something I need to tell you," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the movie's soundtrack.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
I swallowed hard, my mind racing with possibilities.
"I'm not just here because of your sister," she confessed, her eyes searching mine for understanding.
I leaned forward, my hand still holding hers on the carpet.
The movie played in the background, casting flickering shadows across her face as she looked down at our intertwined fingers.
She took a deep breath before continuing.
"I've been making excuses to come over for years. Even when Jess isn't around," she admitted, her voice filled with vulnerability.
"I'd watch you at basketball practice and wear your favorite perfume just so you'd notice me."
My throat tightened as I remembered catching her staring at me by the pool last summer.
My face flushed hot at the memory, and I felt my pulse quicken.
Jaclynn squeezed my hand, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
"And then there was that time by the pool..."
She paused, her lips curling into a knowing smile as she whispered, "I think you already know how I feel."
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
My heart thundered in my chest as her confession hung in the air between us.
She was still holding my hand, her thumb tracing lazy circles on my palm as she waited for my response.
The movie played in the background, casting flickering shadows across her face.
I took in every detail of her expectant expression: her slightly parted lips, the way she leaned forward toward me, and how her other hand fidgeted with the hem of her shirt.
The moment stretched out as I tried to process everything she'd just said.
All those times I'd caught her staring at me suddenly made sense.
Without thinking too much about it, I shifted closer on the carpet, bringing my face inches from hers.
My heart pounded in my chest, and I could feel her hand still warm in mine.
She remained perfectly still, watching me with wide eyes as I closed the gap between us.
The movie's soft dialogue faded into the background, replaced by the sound of my own ragged breathing.
Her coconut scent filled my senses, and I felt myself being drawn to her.
My free hand trembled slightly as I reached up to brush a strand of hair out of her face.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
Jaclynn tilted her head up expectantly, her fingers tightening around mine.
Time seemed to slow as I hesitated for a fraction of a second, taking in every detail of her eager expression: her parted lips, flushed cheeks, and wide eyes.
Then, without another thought, I leaned in closer.
My hand cupped her cheek, and my thumb traced the outline of her jaw.
Her breath hitched as our noses touched, and her other hand gripped the front of my shirt.
The movie's soft music filled the silence between us as we hovered there, neither of us pulling away.
I shifted my weight on the carpet, trying to get closer to her.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
My elbow knocked against her knee, causing her to stumble forward unexpectedly.
Her soft lips grazed mine for a fraction of a second before she pulled away, eyes wide with surprise.
