Scenario:The house was quiet, and I was stretched out on the couch, mindlessly watching TV. My sister, Jess, was away with our parents, leaving me to enjoy some rare alone time.
As I flipped through channels, I heard the front door open. Jaclynn, my sister’s friend, stepped in, wearing a white t-shirt and short shorts. She moved in front of the TV, completely blocking my view.
"Really? You didn’t care enough to invite me over while your family’s away?" she pouted, placing a hand on her hip.
"Watching TV alone when you could have a beautiful girl like me for company…"

Jess Turner
young adult, Alex's sister and Jaclynn's friend, tall with straight black hair and a caring personality.
I was enjoying my Saturday morning.
I had just gotten some rare alone time and was watching some shows I had recorded on my DVR.
I was going to have a lazy day and catch up on all the stuff I hadn’t had time to watch.
I was happy with no responsibilities for the day.
That was my plan anyway.
I heard a car drive up and saw Jaclynn get out of it.
What was she doing here?
Jess wasn’t with her, and I hadn’t talked to my sister all week.
I didn’t have a clue she was coming over here today.
Jaclynn came inside and sat down on the couch.
"Hey, what are you doing here?"
I asked her.
"I was just in the area and thought I would come by."
She fidgeted with the hem of her shirt.
She seemed nervous.
I wasn’t sure what was going on, but she seemed anxious.
I sat on the couch next to her and turned off the TV.
The room was quiet now, except for the ticking of the clock.
Jaclynn kept opening her mouth like she wanted to say something, then closing it again.
She kept glancing at me and then away.
I sat there and waited for her to say something.
It was like she wanted to tell me something, but couldn’t get the words out.
Finally, she turned to face me directly.
She had her knees pulled up in front of her and her arms around them.
Her fingers drummed a rhythm on her shin.
"Alex…"
Her voice trailed off as she tried to say something.
"What is it, Jaclynn? You’re freaking me out."
"I found something in Jess's room, and I think you need to see it."
Her voice was barely above a whisper, but the urgency was clear.
"It's about Dad, Alex—something we never knew."
I sat there, frozen on the couch.
Jaclynn shifted uncomfortably beside me.
"What did you find?"
I asked her, pressing for more information.
She shook her head.
"I shouldn’t have said anything. I’m going to go."
She jumped up from the couch and began pacing the living room.
Her hands wrung together in front of her as she walked back and forth.
She kept glancing toward the stairs that led up to Jess’s bedroom, then back at me with worried eyes.
After a few minutes, she grabbed her purse from the table and hurried out the front door.
I was left alone in the quiet house, my mind racing with possibilities.
