MidReal Story

My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend

Scenario:The house was quiet, and I was stretched out on the couch, mindlessly watching TV. My sister, Jess, was away with our parents, leaving me to enjoy some rare alone time. As I flipped through channels, I heard the front door open. Jaclynn, my sister’s friend, stepped in, wearing a white t-shirt and short shorts. She moved in front of the TV, completely blocking my view. "Really? You didn’t care enough to invite me over while your family’s away?" she pouted, placing a hand on her hip. "Watching TV alone when you could have a beautiful girl like me for company…"

I was having a good day.
It didn’t happen often, but I had the house to myself.
Jess was out with Jaclynn, doing whatever it is they do when they’re together.
I don’t know, and I don’t want to know.
All I know is that it’s rare I get the house to myself, so I’m enjoying it.
The TV’s playing some show I’ve been wanting to watch for a while, and I’m eating some cake my mom bought for us last night.
I should be in heaven, but I’m not.
My eyes are glued to the front door.
Jaclynn just turned up.
She looked surprised to see my car in the driveway, and now she’s standing on the porch, staring at me through the window.
I thought I’d have the house to myself for a little while longer.
My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend
I’m still frozen on the couch, watching her silhouette behind the frosted glass of the front door.
I could pretend I’m not home.
I could just sit here and watch her walk away.
But my fingers are gripping the TV remote tighter than they need to be, and I know I won’t do that.
She knocks twice, soft but deliberate.
The cake is half-eaten on the coffee table in front of me, and I push myself up, my socks sliding against the hardwood floor.
Each step I take toward the door feels heavier than the last.
The brass doorknob is cool against my palm as I turn it just enough to create a narrow gap.
"Why are you here, Jaclynn?" I ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
"I need to talk to you about Jess," she replies, her eyes darting nervously.

"Is she okay?" I ask, a knot forming in my stomach.
"Jess is fine," she assures me, pushing the door open and forcing me to step aside.
She pushes past me into the house, her floral perfume wafting behind her.
I close the door, and she’s already making her way into the living room.
She plops down on my spot on the couch, disrupting the perfectly molded cushion indent I’d created over the past few hours.
The coffee table is still littered with my abandoned cake.

Jaclynn kicks off her sandals and stretches her legs across the couch, wiggling her pink-painted toes.
"My feet are killing me from shopping all day," she sighs dramatically, patting the small space beside her.
I remain standing, the distance between us feeling like a chasm I can't cross.
