MidReal Story

My Sister’s Flirtatious Friend

Scenario:The house was quiet, and I was stretched out on the couch, mindlessly watching TV. My sister, Jess, was away with our parents, leaving me to enjoy some rare alone time. As I flipped through channels, I heard the front door open. Jaclynn, my sister’s friend, stepped in, wearing a white t-shirt and short shorts. She moved in front of the TV, completely blocking my view. "Really? You didn’t care enough to invite me over while your family’s away?" she pouted, placing a hand on her hip. "Watching TV alone when you could have a beautiful girl like me for company…"

I was having a pretty great Saturday.
Jess was out with Jaclynn—at some concert or something.
Our parents were at their weekly golf tournament.
I hadn’t done any homework yet, and I didn’t have to work tonight.
I had the whole house to myself, which almost never happened.
I was able to sit on the couch, under the blanket, in my boxers, eating Cheetos and watching a marathon of Robot Chicken.
The only thing that would’ve made it better was if I had a date with the shower, but I was too lazy for that.
As soon as I heard the knock on the door, I groaned.
Not only did my alone time get ruined, I wasn’t dressed enough to answer the door.
I waited for whoever it was to go away.
When they didn’t after a few seconds, I muttered, "Fuck off."
When they knocked again, I huffed in annoyance.
My parents had a key; it was either Jaclynn or Jess.
Considering one of them was supposed to be somewhere else with my sister, it surprised me when Jaclynn’s voice called through the door, "Alex?"
I rolled my eyes before I stood up and put the blanket aside.
I stumbled around to find some clothes while I made my way to the door.

I found my discarded basketball shorts on the floor near the TV and picked them up.
I pulled them on as I hopped toward the door, nearly tripping when they got caught on my heel.
I had to stop and yank them loose, which made my heart beat a little faster than usual.
It wasn’t just from the quick movements; it was also because I was caught off guard.
Now that I was at the door, I put my hand on the handle but didn’t open it yet.
"Who is it?"
I called out, trying to sound casual even though I knew who it was.
"It's Jaclynn," she replied, her voice slightly muffled through the door.
"Can you open up? I really need to talk to you about something important."
I hesitated for a moment before unlocking the door, my mind racing with possibilities of what she might say.

When I opened the door, Jaclynn was standing there, her usual smile replaced by a frown.
She looked at me with uncertainty in her eyes.
"Hey, Alex. Can I come in?"
I nodded and stepped aside to let her in.
She walked past me into the house without waiting for my answer.
I closed the door behind her and followed her into the living room.
My eyes went straight to the coffee table where I had left the winning lottery ticket.
It was lying there in plain sight, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I realized how exposed it was.
I tried to act casual as I walked over to the table and picked up some magazines that were stacked on top of it.
I used them to cover the ticket, pretending like I was just cleaning up.

Jaclynn followed me into the living room and sat down on the couch.
"I’m sorry to drop by unannounced like this, but I really need to talk to you," she said, looking at me with pleading eyes.
I nodded and sat down next to her, trying not to let my nervousness show.
"What’s going on?"
I asked, trying to sound casual despite the fact that my hands were sweating profusely. "Jess and I got into a fight at the concert," she said, her voice trembling slightly.
"We were supposed to meet up with some other friends after the show, but she bailed on us. She said she wasn’t feeling well, but I think she was just mad at me."
I listened intently as she told me about their argument, but my mind kept drifting back to the lottery ticket hidden beneath the magazines.
I couldn’t believe how careless I had been to leave it out in plain sight like that.
If Jaclynn had seen it when she came in, she would have known immediately that something was up.
But so far, she hadn’t said anything about it, so maybe she hadn’t noticed it after all.

As soon as Jaclynn stood up from the couch and headed toward the kitchen, I quickly slid the magazines off of the coffee table and stuffed the ticket into my pocket before following her.
"Alex, there's something else," Jaclynn said, her voice barely above a whisper as she turned to face me.
I stopped in my tracks, my heart thudding loudly in my ears.
"Jess mentioned something about you having a secret, something big, and I think it might be why she left."
