I was enjoying my Saturday morning.
I had just gotten done watching the last episode of Prison Break and was about to start another show.
I didn’t get much time alone; I usually had to take care of my niece, Mackenzie.
Not that I didn’t enjoy spending time with her, but it was nice to have some alone time for once.
I was just getting ready to start my show when I heard a knock at the door.
I groaned.
I wasn’t expecting anyone to be coming over.
I walked slowly and hesitantly to the door.
When I opened it, my eyes widened in surprise.
Jaclynn Kingston was standing on my porch.
She was a petite blonde with curly hair.
She was one of my sister Jess’ best friends.
"Um, hey," I said awkwardly.
We didn’t really talk much.
I guess I should’ve been prepared to see her since she was one of my sister’s best friends.
"What are you doing here?"
"I was in the neighborhood and thought I would stop by. I didn’t think you would be here though. Your sister said she was taking your parents and Mackenzie to the beach today."
"Yeah, she did," I replied.
I didn’t want to be rude, but I didn’t really want her here either.
"Can I come in?" she asked, already walking past me.
I stepped aside reluctantly.
She walked into the living room and sat down on the couch.
She smelled like floral perfume.
She patted the spot next to her on the couch.
I remained standing with my arms crossed over my chest.
"So, what are you doing today?"
she asked.
"Not much. Just watching TV."
"Oh, that sounds boring," she said, pulling out her phone.
She started scrolling through it, then stopped at a message and showed it to me.
It was a conversation between her and Jess about a surprise birthday party for their friend Emma next weekend.
They were planning on having it at our house since we had a big backyard and were close to Emma’s house.
"Jess wants me to ask you if you can help us out," Jaclynn said, touching my arm as she spoke.
Her hand lingered on my arm for a second before she moved it back to her lap. "What do you need help with?"
I asked, backing away from her slightly.
"We need someone to distract Emma while we set everything up. We were thinking maybe you could take her out for ice cream or something."
"Okay, sure," I replied, sitting down in the armchair instead of next to her on the couch.
I nodded and sat down in the armchair.
Jaclynn pulled her legs up onto the couch and turned to face me.
She grabbed one of the throw pillows and hugged it to her chest, still looking at me.
The TV droned on in the background.
"So, how’s work been? I heard you got a promotion."
"Yeah, I did. It’s been going well so far."
"That’s great. What are your new responsibilities?"
"Mainly just working longer hours," I replied.
She scooted to the edge of the couch, closing the gap between us.
My hands gripped the armrests tightly.
She reached over and brushed some lint off my sleeve.
Her face was inches from mine.
