I was in love with my best friend’s little sister.
I’d tried to ignore it, but it was pointless.
The only way I’d been able to keep from acting on my feelings was by avoiding her.
Not an easy task in a small town where I saw her everywhere I went, but I’d done my best to limit our interactions.
I was a failure.
She was growing up, and it was harder and harder to not notice her.
My best friend had no idea I’d been in love with his little sister for years.
He would have killed me if he’d known, and rightly so.
I shouldn’t have let myself fall for her.
I should have been stronger.
But it didn’t matter now.
The damage was done, and I had no idea what to do about it.
Mia was a beautiful young woman.
She’d grown into the sweetest little heartbreaker in town, and she had no idea.
I knew she was planning on going out on a date with some guy from school tonight, and I couldn’t bear the thought of it.
I couldn’t sleep last night, and all I could think of was Mia in another guy’s arms.
The thought made me sick to my stomach, and I knew I had to do something.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
I paced back and forth in my bedroom, phone in hand.
I’d been practicing what I was going to say for the past hour, but I still wasn’t sure if I could do it.
My fingers hovered over Jake’s contact in my phone, and I took a deep breath.
I could do this.
I had to do this.
I pressed call, and the dial tone stretched out for what felt like forever.
"Hey man, what’s up?"
Jake answered on the second ring, sounding cheerful as always.
"Not much, just wanted to see how you were doing," I said, trying to sound normal despite the fact that my heart was pounding in my chest.
"I’m good. Just got done with work and was thinking about heading out with some friends tonight. You?"
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
"I’m good too," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Any big plans for the weekend?"
"Not really," Jake said.
"Just hanging out with some friends. You know how it is."
"Yeah, I do," I said, forcing a laugh.
"Hey, have you heard from Mia lately?"
Jake was silent for a moment before answering.
"Yeah, she called me yesterday. She’s doing well. Why?"
"No reason," I said quickly, realizing that I’d probably sounded too interested.
"I was just wondering if she’d be around this weekend."
"She’s got plans with some friends tonight," Jake said, sounding suspicious.
"Why? What’s going on?" "Nothing," I said quickly, cursing myself for being so obvious.
"I just wanted to make sure she was okay."
"Well, she’s fine," Jake said, his voice firm.
"But if you’re looking for someone to hang out with this weekend, maybe you should try calling her yourself."
"Yeah, maybe," I said, stumbling over my words.
"Well, thanks for letting me know. I’ll talk to you later."
"Sure thing," Jake said before hanging up the phone.
I stood there staring at my phone for a moment before tossing it onto my bed in frustration.
I stared at the phone, feeling a mix of relief and dread.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
Just as I was about to put it down, it buzzed with a new message.
It was from Mia: "Hey, I heard you were asking about me... everything okay?"
I stared at the message, my heart pounding in my chest.
I paced back and forth in my bedroom, phone in hand.
My hands were shaking as I tried to type out a response, but I kept deleting it.
Nothing I wrote seemed right.
I looked out my window and saw Mia sitting on the old swing set in her backyard.
She was still waiting for my response, occasionally looking down at her phone.
The sight of her made my chest tighten.
Just as I was about to give up and put my phone down, it buzzed again.
I nearly dropped it, thinking it was Mia again, but it was just my cousin Sam: "Hey, just wanted to see if you were doing okay. You seemed a little off earlier."
I sank down onto my bed, my thumb hovering over the screen.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
I took a deep breath and finally typed, "Mia, can we talk?"
I sat on my bed, staring at the text on my phone.
Sam’s offer to meet up for a drink was tempting, but I didn’t want to get too distracted from Mia.
I glanced out my window and saw her still sitting on the swing.
She hadn’t responded to my message yet, but I knew she was still out there.
Her dark hair was blowing gently in the evening breeze, and I could see her lips moving as she sang along to a song.
I felt my heart tighten in my chest as I watched her, and I knew I couldn’t put this off any longer.
I quickly typed out a response to Sam: "Meet me at the corner store in 10. I need to talk."
I didn’t wait for his response before getting up and grabbing my jacket.
I rushed down the stairs, almost running into my mom as she came around the corner.
"Hey, where are you off to?"
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
She asked, eyeing me curiously.
"Just meeting up with some friends," I said quickly, trying not to draw attention to myself.
"Okay, be safe," she said, turning back towards the kitchen. I nodded and headed for the door, not wanting to give her a chance to ask more questions.
As soon as I stepped outside, I took a deep breath of the cool night air.
The street was quiet, with only a few cars passing by every now and then.
I glanced back at Mia’s house one last time before getting into my truck and driving away.
When I arrived at the corner store, Sam was already there waiting for me.
He had a bottle of whiskey in his hand and was leaning against his truck, looking relaxed as always.
"Hey man," he said as I got out of my truck.
"What’s going on?"
"Not much," I said, trying to act casual despite the fact that my heart was racing.
"Just thought we could hang out for a bit."
"Sounds good," Sam said, nodding towards his truck.
"Let’s get this party started."
As we drove away from the store, Sam handed me the bottle of whiskey and I took a long swig.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
The liquid burned down my throat, but it helped to calm my nerves a bit. We drove around for a while, talking about nothing in particular until Sam finally asked me what was going on.
"You seem a little off tonight," he said, glancing over at me with concern in his eyes.
"Is everything okay?"
I looked over at him, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside me.
I took another swig of whiskey before answering.
"Yeah, everything’s fine," I said, trying to sound convincing.
"I just have a lot on my mind."
Sam nodded and turned his attention back to the road.
We drove in silence for a few minutes before he spoke up again.
"Where do you want to go?"
I looked out the window and saw that we were approaching the lake.
"Let’s stop here," I said, pointing to a spot near the water’s edge.
Sam nodded and pulled the truck over, turning off the engine.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
We both got out and walked towards the water, looking out at the sunset.
The sky was painted with colors of orange and pink, and the water was calm and peaceful.
I took another swig of whiskey as we stood there, feeling a sense of calm wash over me. Sam turned to me after a few minutes and asked me again what was going on.
I sighed and looked down at my phone, which was still clutched in my hand.
"I just need to talk to someone," I said, feeling a lump form in my throat.
Sam nodded and put his hand on my shoulder.
"You can tell me anything," he said softly.
I took a deep breath and looked out at the water again.
"I don’t know if I can," I said, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside me.
"You can trust me," Sam said, squeezing my shoulder gently.
I nodded and took another swig of whiskey before speaking again.
"It’s about Mia," I said, feeling my heart tighten in my chest.
Sam looked at me curiously, clearly not expecting that response.
"What about her?" he asked softly. I took a deep breath and tried to gather my thoughts before speaking again.
"I’ve had feelings for her for a long time," I said, feeling my voice shake slightly.
"But I never thought she would feel the same way."
Sam nodded and looked out at the water again, giving me time to process my thoughts.
"I just don’t know what to do," I said finally, feeling a sense of frustration wash over me.
"I don’t want to ruin our friendship."
Sam turned to me again and put his hand on my shoulder once more.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
"You won’t ruin anything," he said softly.
"Mia is a smart girl. She’ll make her own decisions."
I nodded and took another swig of whiskey before speaking again.
I nodded, feeling the weight of his words settle in as I watched the sun dip below the horizon.
I gripped my steering wheel, staring at Mia’s text through blurry eyes.
Sam offered to drive me home, but I shook my head.
I needed to sober up before I saw her.
We sat there for another hour, watching the darkness settle over the lake while I sipped water and ate the stale gas station chips Sam had bought.
My hands were still shaking when I finally started the drive home, but my mind felt clearer.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
As I pulled into my driveway, I saw Mia still on her swing, illuminated by her back porch light.
I killed the engine but stayed in my car, watching her swing under the yellow light.
My phone felt heavy in my pocket, still carrying her unread message.
When she finally saw me, she waved and motioned for me to come over.
My legs felt wooden as I crossed our yards.
She stood up from the swing and held out a folded piece of paper.
"Remember when we were kids and you'd write me notes during Jake's baseball games?"
She unfolded the paper, creasing it at the edges.
The corners were worn, like she'd been holding onto it for a long time.
I recognized my own handwriting, but I couldn't remember what I'd written.
Then it hit me: this was the letter I'd written her when we were twelve, the one I never had the courage to give her.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
I stared at the paper in her hands, feeling my chest tighten.
"I never gave it to you," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
She smiled and took a step closer to the swing set.
She ran her fingers along the metal frame until she reached the spot where the chains attached.
The porch light caught on something metallic as she pried open a small panel I never knew existed.
Inside, I saw more folded papers, photographs, and small trinkets.
My hands were shaking as she pulled out another letter - this one in her handwriting.
"When we were kids, I used to hide things here," she said softly, unfolding the paper.
"Things I couldn't tell anyone. Things I couldn't even tell you."
My heart was racing as she handed me the letter.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
I recognized her handwriting from years ago, but I couldn't make out what it said.
"Why are you showing me this?"
I asked, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside me.
She smiled again, her eyes sparkling with a mix of sadness and hope.
"Because I want you to know that I've always cared about you too," she said softly.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
"I've always wanted to be with you."
I leaned against the swing set pole, watching her hands tremble as she held the old letter.
The metal felt cool against my back, grounding me as my head spun from the whiskey and her confession.
She stepped closer, her familiar strawberry shampoo scent mixing with the evening air.
When our eyes met, I noticed tears clinging to her lashes.
My throat tightened as I tried to form words, but she reached for my hand first.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
Her fingers interlocked with mine, warm and soft.
"I kept everything, you know," she whispered, glancing at the hidden compartment.
"Every note, every memory, hoping one day you'd find them."
I squeezed her hand gently, feeling the weight of all the years between us lift just a little.
Still holding hands, we walked across her moonlit backyard toward the massive oak tree where we used to play as kids.
My steps were unsteady from the whiskey, but Mia's grip kept me anchored.
She pulled a small flashlight from her pocket and clicked it on, casting a weak beam on the ground.
As we reached the base of the tree, she shone the light up, revealing the rough bark and the spot where we'd carved our initials years ago.
I let go of her hand and ran my fingers over the worn grooves, remembering how Jake had caught us that day and chased me home with a baseball bat.
My Sister's Boyfriend's Brother
Mia giggled softly beside me, as if remembering the same moment.
She knelt down at the base of the tree, where a hollow spot formed in the trunk.
The flashlight beam danced around it as she reached inside, pulling out a rusty tin box.
