Ella Jenkins
and determined. Ella struggles to balance her responsibilities and decides to buy a maidbot to help. However, he shows a protective side when dealing with Ella's son, Noah, and develops a deeper connection with Ella as they navigate their professional relationship further.
Noah
and affectionate. Noah adores his father who is absent in his life. He plays a significant role in bringing Ella and Jax together when an emergency arises requiring immediate attention. Noah's presence highlights Ella's need for support and influences her decision to accept Jax's offer of a temporary living arrangement to ensure his care.
I never thought I’d buy a maidbot clone of myself.
I mean, why would I?
It seemed like something only the super-rich would do.
But here I was, standing in my living room, staring at a robot that looked identical to me.
Well, almost identical.
The maidbot had the same long, curly brown hair and hazel eyes as me.
She even had the same small mole above her left eyebrow.
But whereas I was tired and worn out from working fulltime as a graphic designer and part-time as a bartender, the maidbot looked fresh and rested.
"Hello," I said, feeling silly for talking to a robot.
"Hello," the maidbot replied, her voice sounding exactly like mine.
"I am your new maid. What would you like me to start with?"
I stared at her in confusion.
This was not what I had expected.
I thought the maidbot would have different-colored hair or eyes.
Something that made her stand out as not human.
But she looked almost identical to me.
"Um… I guess you can start with the dishes."
The maidbot nodded and walked over to the kitchen sink.
I watched her in confusion, wondering how I was going to tell them apart.
"Can you change your hair or something?"
I asked.
The maidbot looked up at me in surprise.
"Change my hair? Whatever for?"
I sat down at my kitchen counter and watched the maidbot load the dishes into the dishwasher.
She moved methodically, each plate and cup being placed with calculated efficiency.
The afternoon sun streamed through the window, highlighting the dust motes that danced in the air.
It was a peaceful scene, one that I had witnessed many times before.
But this time, it was different.
This time, I wasn’t alone.
The maidbot hummed softly to herself as she worked, a habit that I hadn’t programmed into her but recognized as my own.
As she finished loading the dishes, she turned to me with expectant eyes.
"Is there anything else you would like me to do?" she asked.
I thought for a moment, trying to come up with a task for her to complete.
But nothing came to mind.
The maidbot stood there, waiting patiently for my response.
Finally, I spoke up. "No, that’s all for now. Thank you."
The maidbot nodded and turned back to the sink.
I watched her as she began to wash the remaining dishes by hand.
Her movements were precise and efficient, just like they had been when she loaded the dishwasher.
As I watched her work, an idea began to form in my mind.
I could use this similarity between us to my advantage.
Standing up from my seat at the counter, I grabbed my purse and headed towards the door.
"Where are you going?" the maidbot asked, looking up from her work.
"I have some errands to run," I replied, not wanting to give too much away just yet.
I lingered by the front door, watching as the maidbot finished loading the last plate into the dishwasher.
She then turned to the counter, wiping it down with a circular motion.
It was exactly how I did it.
The possibilities started clicking into place.
With the maidbot handling the never-ending pile of laundry and grocery shopping, I could finally catch up on my graphic design projects.
I ran my fingers over the doorknob as I mentally listed off all that I needed to do tomorrow: three client meetings, Noah’s doctor appointment, and that overdue deadline for Mr. Thompson.
The maidbot turned to face me, her hazel eyes - my eyes - expectant.
"Is there anything else you would like me to do?"
