I needed a place to stay, and fast.
My old landlord was kicking me out, and I couldn’t afford to pay the new rent.
I was a poor college student working multiple jobs just to make ends meet.
I didn’t have enough time or money to book a hotel for the night.
As I scrolled through social media, I saw an ad for a room for rent.
The price was cheap, almost too cheap, but it was in a large house shared with other roommates.
I thought it could be a good temporary solution until I figured something else out.
I messaged the number on the ad, and after a brief conversation, the guy agreed to meet me at the house that evening.
I arrived at the house just as the sun began to set.
It was in a nice neighborhood with big houses and well-manicured lawns.
I couldn’t believe how cheap the rent was compared to what I would have had to pay in my old place.
A guy answered the door after I rang the bell.
He was tall and thin with dark hair and light brown eyes behind black-framed glasses.
"Hi," he said, holding out his hand.
"I’m Adam."
"Hi, Celeste."
I shook his hand before following him inside.
The living room was decorated in modern furniture with a large TV hanging on the wall.
Another guy was sitting on the couch playing video games.
He looked up at us briefly but then went back to his game.
I walked over to the couch, my shoes sinking into the plush carpet.
The guy paused his game and stood up.
He was even taller than Adam, with dark hair that fell perfectly around a chiseled face.
He had a well-groomed goatee that framed his full lips.
"I’m Lorenzo," he said, his voice deep and smooth.
His light brown eyes locked onto mine as he extended his hand.
Our fingers touched, and I noticed how warm his palm felt against mine.
The handshake lingered a moment too long before I pulled away.
Adam cleared his throat, breaking the moment.
Lorenzo smirked before settling back onto the couch and unpausing his game.
I knew then that this house held secrets I couldn't yet understand.
I follow Adam up the curved staircase to the second floor.
Lorenzo stays downstairs, still engrossed in his game.
Adam keeps talking about the rent due dates and cleaning schedules, but I barely pay attention.
We reach the second floor, and he gestures to a bathroom on our right.
"Julia and you will be sharing this one. She's the other female tenant, but she's in class right now," he says.
My room is at the end of the hall.
It's smaller than my old place, but it has a large window that lets in plenty of sunlight and looks out into the backyard.
The bed is already made with a fresh set of sheets and a comforter.
Adam hands me the key before explaining where I can find extra linens if I need them.
As we're about to leave my room, Lorenzo appears in the doorway.
He leans against the frame, watching us with an unreadable expression.
"Excuse me," he interrupts Adam's explanation of the laundry schedule.
"Do you need help moving in tomorrow?" he asks me.
"Thanks, but I'll manage," I reply, sensing that this house would demand more than just rent.
"I'll let you get settled then," Adam says, leading me back downstairs.
As we pass through the living room, I avoid eye contact with Lorenzo.
The sliding glass door leads out to the backyard.
It's a decent size, with a concrete patio and overgrown grass.
Two rusty lawn chairs sit under a massive oak tree.
I walk over to examine them more closely.
As I'm inspecting the chairs, I hear the sliding glass door open behind me.
Lorenzo steps out, lighting a cigarette.
He leans against the door frame, watching me.
I pretend to be fascinated by a cluster of weeds near the fence, but my skin prickles under his gaze.
"Like what you see?" he asks after a moment of silence.
I'm not sure if he's referring to the yard or himself.
I turn to answer him, but before I can speak, Adam calls out from inside about needing my signature on some rental paperwork.
I linger at the kitchen counter, pretending to review the rental agreement while stealing glances out the window.
Lorenzo is still outside smoking, occasionally looking my way with that knowing smirk.
Adam explains the payment schedule and how to submit rent online, but I'm too distracted by Lorenzo's presence to pay much attention.
Finally, he comes inside, brushing past me unnecessarily close.
His cologne fills my senses, and I catch myself inhaling deeply.
My hand trembles slightly as I sign the papers.
Adam hands me my copy, but before I can take it, Lorenzo snatches it from his hand.
He scribbles something on the corner before passing it to me.
