I was never really the type to believe in soulmates.
I mean, what are the chances that there's only one person out there for you?
That you'll be soullessly wandering through life until you find that one special person that makes everything fall into place?
It was a nice thought, but I never believed it.
Until recently.
When I turned 18 and got my soulmate mark, I found out who my soulmate was.
And I hid it from them.
I know it's not right, but I couldn't bring myself to tell them.
The reason is because my soulmate is Han Jisung of Stray Kids.
And we've been enemies since the trainee days.
My Rival Is My Soulmate
During dance practice, I made sure to stand on the opposite end of the room from him.
When our groups were practicing the collaborative stage, I kept my eyes on my reflection in the mirror, watching every move I made with intense focus.
"Formations!" the choreographer called out, and we all moved into our places.
I made sure to keep a precise distance from Jisung whenever we were supposed to cross paths.
My muscles strained as I pushed through each sequence of moves, repeating them until they became mechanical.
I could feel Jisung's eyes on me through the mirror, but I refused to meet his gaze.
When he tried to make eye contact, I quickly shifted my gaze to my feet, pretending to adjust my stance.
My Rival Is My Soulmate
The choreographer gathered us all together to demonstrate the new formation changes.
My stomach dropped as he explained that there would be a romantic dance break between Jisung and me.
It was a slow, intimate sequence where we would have to maintain close contact.
The choreographer walked us through the moves, and I stood rigidly as Jisung positioned himself behind me.
His hands hovered uncertainly near my waist, and I could feel his breath on the back of my neck.
The choreographer adjusted our posture, pushing us closer together.
"Remember, you're supposed to be in love," he reminded us.
I nodded, trying to relax into the moment.
As the music began, we started the slow spin.
Jisung's hand gripped my arm, and I could feel my soulmate mark burning beneath my sleeve.
My Rival Is My Soulmate
I tried to focus on the movement, but I couldn't shake the feeling of his touch on my skin. When the music stopped, I quickly pulled away from him.
"I need some water," I muttered, rushing over to my bag.
Jisung followed me, catching up just as I grabbed my bottle.
"Why do you always avoid me like I'm some kind of plague?" he asked, frustration lacing his voice.
My Rival Is My Soulmate
I turned to face him, my heart still racing from the dance.
The water cooler was just a few feet away, and several other idols were gathered there, pretending not to listen in on our conversation.
"Because you're annoying," I snapped, crushing my paper cup in my hand.
"I'm annoying?" he scoffed, his voice low enough that only I could hear.
My Rival Is My Soulmate
I leaned against the wall, trying to steady my breathing.
Jisung towered over me, his arm braced against the wall beside my head.
The other idols had scattered, leaving us alone in the hallway.
My soulmate mark was still pulsing beneath my sleeve from our contact during practice.
I pressed my lips together and glared at him.
"What's your problem with me?"
Jisung demanded, his voice low and intense.
My Rival Is My Soulmate
I press myself further against the wall, hyper-aware of my sleeve where the mark lies hidden beneath my jacket.
Sweat trickles down my neck - he's right, I am overheated, but I can't risk taking off my jacket and exposing the mark.
Jisung's eyes narrow at my silence, and his hand moves toward my sleeve.
I quickly grab my jacket tighter, but he's faster.
His fingers catch the fabric, and I feel it start to slide.
My Rival Is My Soulmate
Panic surges through me as I wrestle against his grip, desperately trying to keep the jacket in place.
But in that split second, the sleeve slipped just enough for him to see the mark.
Jisung's eyes lock onto the mark, his expression shifting from anger to shock.
My chest tightens as his grip on my sleeve loosens.
He stares at me for a moment, then his gaze drops back down to the mark.
I watch his face cycle through confusion, disbelief, and something else I can't name.
His hand trembles as he reaches out to touch the mark, tracing it with his fingertips.
My skin tingles where he touches me.
I hold my breath as he pulls up his own sleeve, revealing an identical mark.
My stomach drops.
The silence stretches between us, heavy and suffocating.
Finally, Jisung breaks it with a hoarse whisper: "How long have you known?"
My Rival Is My Soulmate
I can't meet his eyes as I answer: "Since my birthday."
He doesn't say anything else, just stands there staring at me.
I stand frozen, unsure of what to do.
Jisung's eyes are fixed on me, his gaze intense and unwavering.
Slowly, he takes a step closer to me.
I tense, my heart pounding in my chest.
He stops when he's only inches away from me, his eyes locked on mine.
I can feel the heat radiating off of him, and I'm acutely aware of how close we are.
He reaches out his hand, and I flinch, expecting him to touch me.
But instead, he hovers his hand near my arm where the mark is.
I can feel the warmth of his skin radiating onto mine, but he doesn't touch me.
My Rival Is My Soulmate
He just holds his hand there for a moment before pulling it back.
"I've been searching for you," he says quietly, his voice steady despite the turmoil I can see in his eyes. I don't know what to say to that, so I just stand there staring at him.
He takes another step closer to me, and I can feel my heart pounding in my chest.
He's so close now that I can feel the warmth of his breath on my skin.
"I want to seal our bond," he says, his voice low and determined.
I swallow hard, trying to process what he's saying.
I've spent so long denying our bond that the thought of sealing it feels foreign to me.
But as I look into Jisung's eyes, I can see the sincerity there.
He wants this more than anything else in the world.
And as much as I try to fight it, I know that I want it too.
