Imogen Harper
She is an assistant at a company owned by a mob boss. She is naive, determined, and insecure. Imogen is surprised to find herself favored by the mob boss, Dominique Russo, who treats her with unexpected kindness. Her friend Chloe warns her about the company's mafia connections. Despite being intimidated by Dominique's powerful presence, Imogen feels a strange connection to him. She struggles with her own insecurities, particularly her appearance compared to Dominique's partner’s exwife, Elena.
Chloe
She is Imogen's best friend and also works at the company owned by Dominique Russo. She is perceptive, protective, and witty. Chloe warns Imogen about the mafia connections at the company and keeps an eye out for her safety. She teases Imogen about her crush on Dominique but believes it's harmless. Chloe provides comic relief and support, sharing valuable insights about the workplace dynamics and offering advice when Imogen encounters problems with their colleague, Luca.
Dominique Russo
He is the mob boss and owner of the company where Imogen works. He is intimidating, enigmatic, and cold. Dominique switches from being harsh to everyone else to being unusually kind and considerate towards Imogen. His demeanor suggests a complex personality behind his menacing exterior. He often challenges Imogen’s perceptions and helps her see things from different angles. His behavior towards her suggests a possible hidden motive or personal connection that he does not openly discuss.
I started working at this company six months ago.
At first, I didn’t know that it was owned by Dominique Russo, a mob boss.
I was too naive and didn’t understand the implications of that.
When I found out, I was already deep in the company.
Too deep to back out even if I wanted to.
It’s probably for the best.
I don’t think I would have made it out alive if I had tried to leave.
Dominique Russo is not a man you want as an enemy.
He is the most powerful man in this city, maybe even the whole country.
His reach is endless and his power unmatched.
He is feared and respected by everyone.
Everyone except his daughter, that is.
She seems to be the only person that can get away with treating him however she wants and still have him doting on her.
Dominique Russo is not a man that is easily swayed by emotions.
He is cold and unrelenting.
I should know; I’ve seen him treat people with the utmost disrespect just because they displeased him for some reason.
He doesn’t seem to care about anyone or anything but himself and his daughter.
While delivering some files to the accounting department in the basement, I notice a door that is slightly ajar.
I’ve never seen this door before, and I’ve been in the basement many times.
I frown as I look down the hallway.
It’s completely deserted, which is weird because there should be at least one person here.
My curiosity gets the better of me, and I find myself walking toward the door.
I slow down as I get closer, my heels clicking against the concrete floor.
I don’t want to make any noise and alert anyone of my presence.
I stop in front of the door and peek through the gap.
The room is dark, but I can make out stacks of boxes with no labels on them.
There is a panel on the wall with a blinking red light, and it looks like some kind of security system.
My heart starts beating faster as I hear footsteps coming from around the corner.
I quickly step away from the door and pretend to check my phone, just as Luca comes into view. He stops when he sees me and narrows his eyes suspiciously.
"What are you doing down here?"
"I was just delivering some files to accounting," I reply calmly, even though my heart is racing inside my chest.
He doesn’t look like he believes me, but he doesn’t say anything else either.
After a moment of silence, he walks past me and into the room.
I turn my head slightly and watch as he closes the door behind him.
I hear the distinct sound of a lock clicking into place, and I wonder what exactly is in that room.
It’s none of my business, but I can’t help being curious.
I should probably report this to Dominique, but something holds me back.
I walk over to the accounting department and hand them the files, then pretend to organize some files that are already on the shelves.
In reality, I’m just trying to get a glimpse of the door again.
I keep glancing over at it, wondering what’s behind it.
Suddenly, I hear a small voice behind me.
"That’s Daddy’s special room."
I turn around, surprised to see a little girl standing there, watching me with big brown eyes.
She can’t be more than five years old, with dark hair and a cute face. "Who are you?"
I ask her gently.
"I’m Sofia," she replies in a sweet voice.
"Sofia? As in Dominique’s daughter?"
She nods her head eagerly, making her ponytail bounce behind her head.
"Yes! That’s me!"
She smiles widely at me, revealing two missing front teeth.
I can’t help but smile back at her; she’s adorable.
"What are you doing down here?"
I ask her curiously.
"I was looking for Daddy," she replies matter-of-factly.
"He said he was going to be down here."
She points to the door behind me and starts walking toward it confidently.
My stomach tightens as I watch her approach the keypad next to the door.
