Seong Gihun
He is a janitor at a large company. He is humble, funny, and hopeful. Gihun dreams of becoming a higher position in the company one day, constantly learning from Inho's methods, whom he despises but admires. He struggles with Inho's condescending behavior and his own unrequited infatuation with Sunhee. Despite being treated poorly by Inho,he remains determined and hopeful, even volunteering to help during a company gala.
Hwang Inho
He is the right hand to the boss at the company. He is arrogant, manipulative, and competitive. Inho enjoys taunting and undermining Gihun, seeing him as beneath him. He becomes intrigued when Sunhee shows interest in both him and Gihun, sparking a rivalry. Despite his haughty demeanor,he is clever and resourceful, often using underhanded tactics to achieve his goals and maintain his position in the company.
Sunhee
She is a worker at the company responsible for important tasks. She is kind, charming, and indecisive. Sunhee is admired by both Inho and Gihun, causing tension between them as she unknowingly becomes entangled in their rivalry. She attends a gala with Inho but leaves with Gihun, confusing Inho who expected her attention. Her interactions with both men are friendly but ultimately undecided as she considers their merits and personality.
Seong Gi-hun.
I hate that guy.
He's a guy who's got everything: good looks, a high school diploma from one of the best schools in the country, a university degree from another top school, and a job at a major company.
On top of all that, he's got a nice personality to boot.
He's got everything going for him, and he knows it.
He's arrogant and likes to look down on others.
He probably thinks he's better than everyone else because of his good looks and his high position at work.
I can't stand being around him.
I hate him even more because he and I both like the same woman.
That woman, Sun-hee, is probably the prettiest woman in the building.
She works at the office doing important paperwork along with In-ho.
She's kind and nice to everyone, whether they're a janitor like me or a high-ranking official like Hwang In-ho.
I've been liking her for a long time now, but I never mustered the courage to ask her out because I know she also likes In-ho.
I grip my mop handle tighter, watching her through the glass walls of her office.
She's typing away at her computer, occasionally brushing her hair behind her ear.
In-ho walks past me, shooting me a condescending look before he enters his own office.
My stomach churns, but I force myself to focus on mopping the floor, inching closer to Sun-hee's door.
At 11:45, she usually heads to the break room to get herself a cup of coffee.
I position myself near the water cooler, pretending to refill the paper cups.
When she comes out of her office, I nearly knock over the stack of cups.
"Sun-hee," I call out, my voice cracking.
She turns around and smiles at me.
"Hi," she says.
"Hi," she says.
"Can I ask you something?" I blurt out, my heart pounding.
"Of course," she replies, her eyes curious and warm.
My heart pounds as I force the words out.
"Would you like to go out with me sometime?"
I ask, gripping the mop handle for support.
She pauses by the water cooler, her coffee cup half-filled.
The office buzz fades to background noise as I wait for her response.
Through the glass walls, I notice In-ho watching us, his expression darkening.
Sun-hee glances at her watch, then at her office where paperwork sits waiting.
She shifts her weight, seemingly torn between politeness and obligation.
"I have a deadline today," she starts apologetically, "but maybe tomorrow?"
Before I can respond, In-ho appears beside us, clearing his throat.
"Sun-hee, the quarterly reports need your attention," he interrupts, placing his hand on her shoulder.
Sun-hee nods, her smile faltering slightly as she looks back at me.
"Tomorrow sounds good," she says softly, her eyes meeting mine with a hint of promise.
In-ho's grip on her shoulder tightens subtly, and he adds, "Let's not keep the team waiting, Sun-hee."
I grip my mop tighter, watching as he guides her away with his hand still on her shoulder.
Through the conference room's glass walls, I see him pull out her chair at the head of the table.
He leans in close, whispering something that makes her laugh softly.
My jaw clenches as I drag the mop across the floor, but I force myself to focus on the promise of tomorrow.
The wet floor sign catches In-ho's attention as he exits the conference room alone.
His gaze lingers on me for a moment before he deliberately steps onto my freshly mopped tiles.
Muddy footprints trail behind him.
I say nothing, just start cleaning them away.
Each stroke of the mop feels like progress toward something better.
I grip the mop handle tighter as he deliberately steps onto my freshly cleaned floor again, leaving another trail of muddy footprints.
The squeaking of his expensive leather shoes against the wet tiles echoes through the empty hallway.
My jaw clenches as I watch him smirk, preparing to walk past without acknowledgment like always.
But today feels different - maybe it's Sun-hee's promise for tomorrow giving me courage, or maybe I'm just tired of being his doormat.
I plant my feet firmly, blocking his path with the mop handle.
In-ho stops, raising an eyebrow with a bemused expression.
"Is there a problem?" he asks, his voice dripping with feigned innocence.
"Yeah," I reply, meeting his gaze steadily, "I think it's time you stopped treating people like they're invisible."
I watch his face twist into that familiar mocking smile as he lifts his coffee cup.
My grip on the mop handle tightens, knuckles turning white.
The fluorescent lights reflect off the perfectly pressed suit he always wears.
He tilts the cup, threatening to spill its contents.
The fresh scent of pine cleaner still lingers on my newly mopped floor.
My jaw clenches as I calculate the extra hour of overtime this will cost me.
Through the glass walls of Sun-hee's office, I notice her looking up from her desk, a concerned expression on her face.
In-ho lowers the cup slightly, his eyes narrowing as he notices Sun-hee watching.
"Seems like you have an audience," he mutters, his voice barely above a whisper.
I glance at Sun-hee, then back at him, and say, "Maybe it's time she sees who you really are."
