I woke up to my daughter screaming at the top of her lungs.
"NIA! CALM DOWN," I yelled at her.
Sometimes when she has her episodes I have to talk to her like that so she snaps out of it.
"Mom," she said in this soft voice.
"Mom what?"
"Where's dad?"
I looked around and didn't see him.
"He's right downstairs making breakfast sweetie," I said as I rubbed her back.
"Oh," she said as she looked down at the floor.
"Mom can I ask you something?"
I nodded my head.
"What is it?"
I could tell she was scared to ask.
"Are...are you afraid of me?"
I looked at her and smiled.
"Oh sweetie, why would you ask me that?"
She looked up at me with tears in her eyes.
"I don't know," she said as she wiped them away.
"I just feel like sometimes you're scared of me."
Now it was my turn to look down at the floor.
"I'm scared of what?!"
I heard Hank yell from downstairs.
Now it was his turn to get yelled at!
"I'M SORRY OKAY! I DIDN'T MEAN TO YELL AT YOU," I heard him say.
I chuckled a little bit but then I looked back up at my daughter who was still looking at me.

Her eyes darted around the room.
That was a sign of Hannah.
"Hannah, is that you?"
I asked softly.
She nodded as she twisted the hem of her yellow cropped shirt.
"I don't want to cause trouble," she whispered.
I knelt beside her and rubbed her arm.
"You're not causing trouble, sweetie."
Just then Hank came into the room with a plate of pancakes in his hands.
"Breakfast is ready," he said as he smiled at us.
Hannah looked at me and I nodded my head.
"Mom, I think I remember something," she said hesitantly.
"What do you remember, Hannah?" I asked gently, trying to keep my voice steady.
"There was a man... he was talking to me in the park yesterday," she whispered, her eyes wide with fear.

I pulled her close to me and held her tight.
"Tell me about the man," I said softly.
"He was tall and skinny... he had a hat on... I couldn't see his face," she said as she trembled against me.
My heart was beating so fast but I tried to keep my voice steady.
"Did he say anything?"
I asked her.
She shook her head no.
Hank put the pancakes on the table and sat down next to us.
"We'll go to the park later, see if he's still there," he said as he rubbed Hannah's back.
She nodded slowly.
"Mom, he said something strange before he left," Hannah whispered, her voice barely audible.
"What did he say, sweetheart?" I asked, trying to mask the urgency in my voice.
"He said, 'Tell your mom the past is catching up,'" she replied, her eyes searching mine for answers.
