I am a woman who appreciates mature conversations.
When I find someone who can have a deep conversation with me, no matter how old they are, I will want to talk to them every day.
If they happen to be eleven years younger than me, that's okay.
I don't care about age.
I care about the person and their ability to hold a conversation that stimulates my mind and warms my heart.
It's not every day that you meet someone who can do that, so when you do, it's a big deal.
That boy was eleven years my junior, and I didn't care.
He was articulate and curious, and he enjoyed talking about the deeper questions in life just as much as I did.
It was wonderful.
We talked every day for weeks, and I found myself looking forward to our conversations more and more.
It was a strange feeling, because part of me knew that I couldn't let things go any further than that.
Not romantically speaking, anyway.
But even so, I couldn't help but feel like I could fall in love with him if I wasn't careful.
My Boyfriend's Secret Sister
I invite him to meet me at our usual coffee shop.
He sits in the worn leather chair across from me, his hot chocolate steaming in front of him.
I fidget with my coffee cup, rehearsing the words I want to say in my head.
The afternoon sun casts long shadows through the window, and the other patrons chat quietly around us.
"Hey, is everything okay?"
Atticus asks, noticing that I've been unusually quiet.
I take a deep breath and look up at him.
"Yes, everything's fine. I just wanted to talk to you about something."
He raises an eyebrow, curious.
"Okay, what's up?"
My Boyfriend's Secret Sister
I take another deep breath before speaking.
"I just wanted to say how much I appreciate our daily talks. You always have such insightful things to say, and it really brightens my day."
His eyes widen slightly, and a small smile forms on his face.
"Thanks," he says softly.
"I enjoy talking to you too."
My Boyfriend's Secret Sister
I quickly continue before he can say anything else.
"I know this might sound strange, but I don't want anything to change between us. I like our friendship just the way it is." He nods slowly, understanding passing between us.
"Okay," he says finally.
"I like it too."
After our heart-to-heart, I suggest we take a walk around the neighborhood to clear our heads.
Atticus agrees, grabbing his backpack as we leave the coffee shop.
We stroll past the local park, where children are playing tag and couples are picnicking on blankets.
As we walk, Atticus pulls out a book from his backpack and begins flipping through its pages.
I glance over at the cover and see that it's a nature guidebook.
"Have you been reading this?"
I ask, curiosity piqued.
He nods enthusiastically.
"Yeah, I picked it up at a used bookstore last week. It's really interesting."
He points to a picture of a tree in the book.
My Boyfriend's Secret Sister
"See this one? It's a silver maple. They're native to this area."
I smile at his excitement.
"That's cool," I say.
"I didn't know that."
He grins back at me.
"There's so much to learn about the world around us. I love discovering new things."
We continue walking in comfortable silence for a few minutes before Atticus speaks up again.
"I've been wanting to learn more about the hiking trails around here," he says wistfully.
"I bet there are some really beautiful ones nearby." I nod in agreement.
"There definitely are. I've heard great things about some of the trails in the nearby state park."
His eyes light up at this information.
"Really? Do you think we could go on a hike sometime?"
I hesitate for a moment before responding.
"Maybe," I say finally.
"I'd have to check my schedule first."
My Boyfriend's Secret Sister
He pulls out his phone and starts typing away furiously.
