I was sitting in my car, waiting for Danny to come out.
I already texted him that I was there, but he didn’t come out yet.
I looked at the time, and it said 3:50 PM.
I told him I would be there by 3:30 PM, but I was late.
I couldn’t help it; the traffic was bad coming from where I live.
I am 30 minutes away from him, which is not fun at all.
I hate leaving him behind whenever I go back home, but I had no choice.
He hugged me so tightly before letting me go.
He cried, telling me not to leave him behind.
It broke my heart seeing him like that, but I had to go.
Whenever I leave him, he gets depressed.
I don’t know why, but I think it’s because we are too attached to each other.
He is half Mexican and half Japanese.
His parents hate that he is gay.
They told him that they would give up on him if he didn’t change his ways.
My Boyfriend's Secret
I check my phone again, but there’s still no message from him.
I put it back down and wait for a few more minutes.
Then, I hear a notification come through.
I grab my phone and open the message.
My heart drops when I read it.
It was from Danny, but his words were trembling as he wrote them.
His parents were forcing him to go to a straight camp next month.
I grip the steering wheel tightly and look out the window.
I can see his house through the windshield.
His parents are probably in there right now, arguing with him about it.

I remember that his mother threatened to do this to him before, but I didn’t think she would actually do it.
My hands were shaking as I typed out a response to him, asking him what happened and why they were doing this to him again.
But he didn’t respond back to me. Twenty minutes later, I saw his bedroom light turn off.
I park outside his house again at midnight.
I look up at his bedroom window, but there’s no sign of him.
I know he’s in there, but I don’t know what he’s doing.
I wait for a few more minutes, and then I see his sister sneak out the back door.
She walks over to my car and taps on the window.
I roll it down, and she hands me a folded piece of paper.
"Thank you," I say to her as she turns around and goes back inside.
I open the note and read it.
It was from Danny.
His handwriting was messy, like always.
My Boyfriend's Secret
He wrote that the camp was some religious retreat center three hours north of here.
He said that he was being sent there tomorrow morning.
His parents were making him pack right now, but they were supervising him so he couldn’t run away. I look up at his bedroom window again, and this time, I can see him moving around in there.
He’s stuffing clothes into a duffel bag while his mother stands guard by the door.
A few minutes later, his father comes into the room and says something to her before leaving again.
My Boyfriend's Secret
That’s when I start my car and drive away, leaving Danny behind once more.
I pull into my driveway and turn off the engine.
My hands are still gripping the steering wheel tightly, like they have been for the past three hours.
I open my phone and scroll through our old text messages and photos together.
The last one is from last week, when we went on a date at a cafe near his house.
He’s smiling at me in the picture, but now he’s gone.
I try calling him again, but it goes straight to voicemail.
His sister texted me earlier saying that their parents confiscated his phone.
I look up through my windshield and watch as the neighbor’s security light flickers on and off.
Tomorrow morning, they’ll drive Danny to that camp, and I can’t do anything to stop it.
I hear a soft knock on my door and see my roommate, Alex, peeking in.
My Boyfriend's Secret
"Hey, you okay?" Alex asks, concern etched on their face.
"No," I reply, my voice barely above a whisper, "Danny's parents are sending him to that camp tomorrow, and I can't just sit here and do nothing."
I drive to my morning class at the university, passing by the coffee shop where Danny and I had our last date.
The empty passenger seat beside me feels like a constant reminder of his absence.
I glance at my phone, hoping for a message from his sister about the camp, but there’s nothing.
She hasn’t responded since yesterday.
During the lecture, I find myself checking my phone obsessively, willing it to buzz with a message from Danny or his sister.
But it remains silent.
The professor drones on about economics, but my mind is elsewhere.
I start sketching possible routes to the retreat center in my notebook, trying to figure out how I can get there.
Between classes, I call Danny's phone again, knowing it's futile.
Alex catches up with me outside the lecture hall, noticing the worry etched on my face.
My Boyfriend's Secret
"Did you hear anything from Danny's sister yet?" Alex asks, matching my hurried pace.
"No, nothing," I reply, frustration creeping into my voice. "But I have to do something before they take him away."
I park my car outside the abandoned retreat center, now closed for three years.
The faded sign still reads "New Path Religious Center" in bold letters, but weeds have grown through the cracked pavement.
I haven’t seen Danny since that morning his parents drove away with him.
His sister lost contact after the first year, when their family suddenly moved without warning.
My countless searches on social media led to nothing.
The last update came from a former camp counselor who quit, saying the "therapy" involved isolation and scripture memorization.
I get out of my car and walk to the chain-link fence, touching the rusted metal where Danny might have stood.
I hear footsteps behind me and turn to see Alex, who insisted on coming along.
"Are you sure this is the place?" Alex asks, eyeing the dilapidated building skeptically.
"Yeah," I nod, my voice filled with determination, "this is where they took him, and I have to find out what happened."
My Boyfriend's Secret
I drive to the retreat center's visitor parking lot, following the directions Danny's sister texted.
The chapel windows are open, and I can hear voices reciting scripture inside.
I walk around to the side of the building and peer through the window.
Danny is sitting in a back pew, his head bowed over a Bible.
I tap on the glass, and he startles, looking up at me with a mix of confusion and fear.
He doesn't smile like he usually does when he sees me.
His eyes look vacant as he gets up from his seat and walks outside to meet me.
"You shouldn't be here," he says flatly, not meeting my eyes.
I reach for his hand, but he steps back.
"I'm not gay anymore," he says, his voice sounding rehearsed and mechanical.
My Boyfriend's Secret
"The counselors helped me see that."
I slump against my car in the retreat center parking lot, tears blurring my vision of the chapel where Danny just rejected me.
My chest heaves as I try to muffle my sobs with my sleeve, not wanting the counselors to hear.
The gravel crunches under my feet as I slide down to sit on the ground, my back against the cold metal door.
Through the windshield, I can still see Danny's silhouette returning to his seat, his movements stiff and unnatural.
My phone buzzes - a text from Alex asking how it went.
My Boyfriend's Secret
I type back, "Not good. He says he's changed."
Alex replies almost instantly, "Changed or brainwashed?"
I hesitate, then text back, "Feels like the latter. We need to get him out of there."
I park behind the retreat center after dark, my heart pounding in my chest.
The building's back door is propped open, and I scan the area for security cameras.
Through gaps in the fence, I see a figure taking out the trash alone - it's Danny.
This is my chance.
I rush over to him, calling his name softly so I don't scare him.
He freezes, that robotic mask still in place, but I don't let it stop me.
When I reach him, I pull him close and kiss him deeply, desperately.
For a moment he stays stiff, then melts against me with a broken sound.
"Baby," he whispers against my lips, his rehearsed coldness cracking.
His fingers clutch my jacket as he kisses me back, trembling.
