My boyfriend is a mafia boss that is feared by everyone even the government, but he hides as a high school nerd. We are both seniors finna graduate soon and we plan to go to college. But soon I find out his dark secret that he has been hiding from me.
I was a high school senior, and I was dating the hottest guy in school.
And he was all mine.
Leo Martinez.
He was tall with dark hair and piercing eyes, and he had a smile that could melt your heart.
He was also the star quarterback of our football team, and he had a full-ride scholarship to play at the University of Texas.
Every girl at our school wanted him, but he only had eyes for me.
I still couldnāt believe that we were together.
Iād had a crush on him since freshman year, but I never thought that heād even notice me.
But then we got paired up in chemistry class, and we hit it off right away.
We started dating after that, and weād been together ever since.
It was the best three years of my life.
But lately, Leo had been acting strange.
He was distant, distracted, and always seemed to be in a hurry to leave after school.
I decided I couldnāt take it anymore.
I had to know what was going on.
So, I waited for him after school, hiding behind the big oak tree near the parking lot.
Leo walked out of the building, his eyes scanning the area like he was expecting someone.
He didnāt see me.
He got into his car and drove off.
I quickly jumped into my own car and followed him at a safe distance.
My heart pounded in my chest as we left the familiar streets of our town and headed towards the outskirts.
The sun was setting, casting long shadows over the abandoned warehouses that lined the road.
Leoās car finally came to a stop in front of one of the warehouses.
I parked a little way down the street and got out of my car, making sure to stay hidden behind some bushes.
Leo walked up to the warehouse door and knocked three times.
The door creaked open, and he slipped inside.
I waited a few moments before creeping closer.
My hands were shaking as I pushed open a small side window and climbed through.
Inside, the warehouse was dimly lit by a few flickering bulbs hanging from the ceiling.
I crouched behind a stack of crates, trying to control my breathing.
Voices echoed through the cavernous space.
āBoss, weāve got everything ready for tonight,ā one of the men said.
āGood,ā Leo replied. āMake sure there are no mistakes.ā
My blood ran cold.
Boss?
What was Leo involved in?
I peeked around the corner of the crates and saw Leo standing with three men who looked like they belonged in a crime movieātattoos, scars, and all.
They were discussing something about a shipment and money laundering.
I couldnāt believe what I was hearing.
Leo wasnāt just acting strange; he was leading a double life!
Suddenly, my foot slipped on a loose piece of wood, and I knocked over one of the crates with a loud crash.
All four heads snapped in my direction.
Leoās eyes locked onto mine, filled with a mix of anger and concern.
āEmily?ā he said, his voice low and dangerous. āWhat are you doing here?ā
"Emily, you shouldn't be here," he said quietly.
I took a step back, fear and confusion swirling in my mind.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Leo glanced at his men, signaling them to stay back with a subtle hand gesture.
"I wanted to protect you," he replied, reaching for my hand.
I pulled away, tears forming in my eyes.
"Protect me? You're a criminal!" I exclaimed, my voice trembling.
Leo's face hardened, the softness replaced by a steely resolve.
"It's complicated," he said, his tone flat.
I shook my head, backing towards the exit.
"I need time to think," I muttered before turning and running out of the warehouse.
The cold night air hit me as I burst through the door.
My feet pounded against the pavement as I sprinted towards my car, my breath coming in ragged gasps.
I fumbled with my keys, finally managing to unlock the door and slide into the driver's seat.
My hands were shaking so badly that it took me a few tries to get the key into the ignition.
As soon as the engine roared to life, I sped away from the warehouse, not daring to look back.
The streetlights blurred past me as I drove aimlessly through the empty streets, trying to process what had just happened.
Leo was involved in something dangerousāsomething illegal.
And he had kept it from me all this time.
Tears streamed down my face as I gripped the steering wheel tighter.
How could he do this?
I pulled over to the side of the road and rested my head on the steering wheel, sobbing uncontrollably.
The image of Leo standing with those men kept replaying in my mind.
I felt betrayed, hurt, and utterly lost.
After what felt like an eternity, I wiped my tears and took a deep breath.
I needed to talk to someoneāsomeone who could help me make sense of this mess.
Without thinking twice, I grabbed my phone and dialed Sarah's number.
She answered on the second ring.
"Emily? What's wrong?" she asked immediately, sensing the urgency in my voice.
"I... I need to see you," I stammered. "It's about Leo."
"Okay, come over," she said without hesitation. "I'll be waiting."
I hung up and started driving towards Sarah's house.
She lived only a few blocks away, but it felt like miles.
When I finally arrived, she was already standing on her porch, her face etched with concern.
I got out of the car and ran into her arms.
"Sarah, it's bad," I choked out between sobs. "Leo... he's not who we thought he was."
She led me inside and sat me down on her couch.
"Tell me everything," she said gently.
I recounted everything that had happenedāthe warehouse, the men, Leo's secret life.
Sarah listened intently, her expression growing more serious by the minute.
"We need to go to the police," she said firmly once I'd finished.
"But what if they arrest him?" I asked, my voice small and scared.
"If he's involved in something illegal, they need to know," Sarah insisted. "You can't protect him if he's putting you in danger."
I nodded slowly, realizing she was right.
We had to do something.
But first, I needed some time to gather my thoughts and figure out our next steps.
Just as we were about to leave for the police station, there was a loud knock on Sarah's front door.
We exchanged worried glances before she cautiously opened it.
Standing there was one of Leo's men from the warehouse.
"Emily Carter?" he asked, his voice gruff.
I froze, my heart pounding in my chest.
Sarah stepped in front of me protectively.
"What do you want?" she demanded.
The man ignored her, his gaze fixed on me.
"Boss wants to see you," he said, taking a step forward.
"No way," Sarah snapped. "She's not going anywhere with you."
Before I could react, the man grabbed my arm and yanked me towards the door.
"Let go of her!" Sarah screamed, trying to pull me back.
He shoved her aside with a force that sent her crashing into the wall.
"Sarah!" I cried out, struggling against his grip.
He dragged me out of the house and towards a black SUV parked at the curb.
My mind raced as I tried to think of a way to escape.
But his grip was like iron, and I couldn't break free.
He threw open the back door and shoved me inside.
I landed hard on the seat, gasping for breath.
The door slammed shut behind me, and I looked up to see Leo sitting in the front seat.
His cold eyes met mine through the rearview mirror.
"You shouldn't have run," he said, his voice devoid of emotion.
My heart felt like it was going to explode from fear and betrayal.
"Why are you doing this?" I whispered, my voice trembling.
Leo didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he started the engine, and the SUV roared to life.
We sped off into the night, leaving Sarah's house behind.
I glanced out the window and saw Sarah banging on it, shouting for help.
Her face was pale with fear and desperation.
"Leo, please," I begged. "Just let me go."
He turned around slightly, his expression unreadable.
"You don't understand," he said quietly. "This is bigger than you or me."
Tears streamed down my face as I tried to process what was happening.
My hands trembled uncontrollably.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked, my voice barely audible.
Leo didn't respond. He just kept driving, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
The city lights blurred past us as we sped through the streets.
I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach, knowing that whatever awaited me was far from good.
Minutes felt like hours as we drove in silence.
Finally, Leo pulled into a deserted parking lot behind an old building.
He turned off the engine and got out of the car.
The burly henchman opened my door and dragged me out roughly.
"Move," he ordered, pushing me towards the building.
I stumbled but managed to stay on my feet. My mind raced with thoughts of escape, but there was no way out.
Leo led us inside through a side entrance. The interior was dimly lit and smelled of damp concrete. The walls were lined with graffiti and peeling paint.
We walked down a narrow hallway until we reached a heavy metal door. Leo unlocked it and pushed it open.
Inside was a small room with a single chair bolted to the floor. A bare lightbulb hung from the ceiling, casting harsh shadows on the walls.
"Sit," Leo commanded.
I hesitated for a moment before complying. The chair was cold and uncomfortable.
Leo stood in front of me, his expression still unreadable. The burly henchman stood by the door, watching us closely.
"You need to understand something," Leo began. "This isn't just about money or power. It's about survival."
I stared at him in disbelief. "Survival? What are you talking about?"
Leo took a deep breath. "There's more at stake here than you know. And if you don't cooperate, things will get much worse."
My mind raced with questions and fears. What had I gotten myself into? And how would I ever get out?
Before I could say anything else, Leo's phone buzzed. He glanced at it and then looked back at me.
"We're out of time," he said grimly. "Stay here."
He turned to leave the room, motioning for his henchman to follow him.
