"My boyfriend asked me to marry him."
I was sitting in my living room, in my pajamas, clutching a cold coffee, and trying very hard not to cry.
"He did what?"
Emily my younger sister picked up her coffee and stared at me.
She had just gotten home from work, and clearly could tell by the look on my face that something was up.
"Is that bad? Why are you crying?"
She sat up straighter, suddenly alert, and that made me cry even harder.
I shook my head.
"No, it’s not bad. It’s just... I don’t know."
I felt so inadequate.
All of my friends were getting engaged, or married, and here I was struggling with whether or not I should accept.
"You don’t know? What do you mean?"
"I just don’t know if I’m ready. I really like him, but I’ve been burned before. I just don’t want it all to end in a disaster."
I blew my nose in the tissue Emily had handed me, and tried to look hopeful.
"It’s not him, it’s me."
"Oh, so you’re one of those girls."
Emily sighed and put down her coffee.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you’re one of those girls that always blame yourself when things go wrong."
"I just don’t want it all to end in a disaster."
Emily rolled her eyes.
"By accepting his proposal?"
"I don’t know. Maybe."
"Have you given him an answer?"
"No."
"Well, you can’t leave him hanging. Either you love him, or you don’t."
