I place my hand over my lower belly, and I rub it gently, hoping that one day someone will be in there kicking away.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath.
I can't believe the news that I just got.
It's something that I've been wanting for a very long time now.
I place my hand back over my belly again; I just wish that the father was as excited about it as I am.
I am a 17 year old boy from Texas.
I have now been living in Japan with my boyfriend for the last five years.
We met when he came to study abroad at my school in Texas.
We were together for a year before I decided to move to Japan with him.
It was hard for me to make that decision.
I had to leave behind my family and my friends.
It was even harder knowing that I would now have to learn a new language and be taught things that I already learned while I was still in America.
It is a good thing that my Japanese is getting better though.
When I first moved here, it was hard knowing that I couldn't even go out and get myself something to eat without having someone there with me to translate what I want to say.
My Boyfriend Doesn't Know I'm Pregnant
I pace back and forth in our small living room, rehearsing the words that I want to say to him.
My hand keeps going back to my belly, it's something that I've been doing a lot since I found out the news yesterday.
I can hear Kaito washing dishes in the kitchen.
The walls in our apartment are very thin, so you can hear everything that goes on in each room.
I take a deep breath and call out his name.
My voice is a little shakier than I want it to be.
"Hai!"
He calls back from the kitchen, and the sound of running water stops.
I can hear his footsteps coming towards me, and I move over to stand by the window where the afternoon sun is shining through.

When Kaito comes into the room, I turn to face him.
My heart is beating a little bit faster than it should be, and I can feel it pounding in my ears.
The sun is shining in through the window and onto the floor, making a long shadow of us from where we are standing.
I don't say anything to him.
Instead I place both of my hands on my stomach and start to rub it.
I make slow circular motions with my hands, staring straight into his eyes.
He tilts his head slightly to the side, his brow furrowing in confusion.
He looks down at my hands on my belly, then back up to my face again, and he still doesn't understand what I'm trying to tell him.
My throat tightens up, and I rub my belly more insistently.
Why can't he see what I'm trying to tell him?

"Does your stomach hurt?"
"No, Kaito, it's not that," I say softly, trying to find the right words.
His eyes widen slightly as he begins to piece it together.
"Wait... are you saying what I think you are?"
My hands tremble against my belly, and I nod my head at him.
He takes a hesitant step forward, his socked feet making no sound on our tatami floor.
The tap in the kitchen is still dripping, he forgot to turn it all the way off again.
I hold my breath, remembering the last time that I had to tell him this kind of news.
The hospital's walls were so cold and sterile then, and his face was so quiet and grief-stricken.

His hand hovers over mine where it rests on my belly.
"Really?" he whispers, his voice cracking a little bit.
I can't find the words to say anything else, so I just nod again.
This time, his smile breaks through the silence, and I finally exhale.
