MidReal Story

My Bestie and My Girlfriend

Scenario:Today, I’d finished my chores and decided to drop by my best friend Jake’s barbershop to do a little haircut. But when I walked in, I froze. Jake greeted me with a grin. “Hey, Honey, check this out,” he said, revealing Belle—my girlfriend—sitting in a chair. She looked flustered and weirdly tired. She was panting and sweating heavily, and her hair was disheveled, as if she'd just been through a vigorous workout. “This is your girlfriend, isn’t she?” Jake smirked, lifting her chin. "Honey... I'm sorry..." Belle apologizes hastily, though her voice sounds somewhat strained.

I pushed open the heavy door and stepped inside the dimly lit barbershop.
The scent of bay rum and sandalwood filled my nose, and I looked around at the old fashioned decorations.
"Hey, man," Jake’s voice called out from the first station, where he was trimming a kid’s hair.
"What’s up?"
Just a quick hello, my girl is running late again, I thought about saying, but something in me hesitated.
Something in the way Belle had acted this morning.
Nah, I wouldn’t jump to conclusions, or accuse her of anything without having all the facts.
I approached Jake’s station, and he gave me a grin as he ran the clippers up the back of the kid’s neck.
"Hey, have you seen Belle? She said she was coming here this morning to get her hair done."
Jake had finished with the clipppers, and he put them down to turn to fully face me.
He pulled the cape from his customer, and raked a hand through his own short black hair as he took in my question.
"Actually… yeah. She was here."
My eyebrows shot up.
"When?""This morning. Like you said."
"How long was she here?"
I asked, my mind already putting together different scenarios.

Jake shrugged, and turned back to the counter.
He picked up a broom and began sweeping the hair from the floor.
"A while."
The rhythmic swoosh of the broom filled the air, and I leaned against the counter, studying Jake’s face.
His jaw was tight, and he kept his eyes on his task.
I looked at the chair where Belle had been sitting.
The leather was still warm, and I could see the slight impression of her body in it.
A used coffee cup sat on the counter next to it, with lipstick stains that matched Belle’s shade of pink.
Jake kept sweeping the same spot, his movements becoming more mechanical.
I reached out and picked up the cup, turning it slowly in my hand.
My Bestie and My Girlfriend
Two sets of fingerprints marked its surface.
"Jake, did she leave with someone?"
He paused, the broom hovering mid-air, before nodding slowly.
"Yeah, she left with that guy from the diner, the one with the leather jacket."
I heard a squawk from the back room, and I moved towards the sound, ignoring Jake’s attempt to block my path.
The parrot cage sat in the corner next to a worn leather couch, and a stack of old magazines.
The green-feathered bird cocked its head at me, and I reached out a hand.
Jake moved to stand next to me.
"I just got it last week," he said, his voice nervous.
"It was the last animal at the pet shop. They were closing down."
I turned back to him, and Belle was still sitting in the chair.
Her fingers gripped the armrests tightly, and her face had lost all its color.
"Jake," she said quickly, "I’m sorry…"
"Oh Jake, right there!"
My Bestie and My Girlfriend
The parrot mimicked Belle’s voice perfectly, and I clenched my hands into fists.
Jake's face turned crimson, and he stammered, "It's not what it sounds like, man."
Belle's eyes pleaded with me, her voice trembling, "Please, let me explain."
I took a deep breath, trying to keep my composure, "You both owe me an explanation, right now."
