MidReal Story

My Bestie and My Girlfriend

Scenario:Today, I’d finished my chores and decided to drop by my best friend Jake’s barbershop to do a little haircut. But when I walked in, I froze. Jake greeted me with a grin. “Hey, Honey, check this out,” he said, revealing Belle—my girlfriend—sitting in a chair. She looked flustered and weirdly tired. She was panting and sweating heavily, and her hair was disheveled, as if she'd just been through a vigorous workout. “This is your girlfriend, isn’t she?” Jake smirked, lifting her chin. "Honey... I'm sorry..." Belle apologizes hastily, though her voice sounds somewhat strained.

I walked into my best friend Jake’s barbershop, looking for my girlfriend Belle.
She had left for her job at the beauty salon hours ago, but she wasn’t there and she wasn’t answering her cell.
I asked one of her coworkers if they had seen her, and they told me she had left early.
I tried calling her again, but again, no answer.
So I did what any worried boyfriend would do, I went looking for her.
The shop is only a block away from the salon, so I started there.
As I walked towards the counter, I saw Belle sitting in Jake’s chair.
My Bestie and My Girlfriend
I stopped in my tracks, my shoes squeaking against the linoleum floor.
Belle’s mascara had run down her cheeks in dark rivulets, and she wouldn’t meet my eyes.
Jake stood behind her, one hand still resting on the back of the chair, watching me with that same knowing smirk.
The shop was too quiet, the only sound coming from the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead and Belle’s uneven breathing.
I stepped forward, my shoes making a soft thud on the floor.
I reached out to touch her shoulder, but she flinched away from me.
Her perfume mixed with sweat and something else I couldn’t quite place.
"Belle, what's going on?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
She finally looked up at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and defiance. "I can't keep hiding this from you anymore," she said, her voice trembling.
Jake sighed, stepping back slightly. "It's time you knew the truth, man," he said, his tone uncharacteristically serious.

I stepped forward, my heart pounding in my chest.
Belle’s eyes darted to me, filled with fear and uncertainty.
"What is it?"
I asked, my voice cracking.
Jake took a deep breath and started to speak, but before he could say anything, Belle’s phone rang.
It was sitting on the counter next to Jake, and it was so quiet in the shop that you could hear it buzzing loudly.
I glanced over at it and saw Jake’s name flashing on the screen.
Belle looked down at her purse, which was clutched tightly in her lap, then back at me.
"Where's your phone?"
I asked her slowly.

She opened her purse, rummaging through its contents as if searching for something she knew wasn't there.
"I must have left it somewhere," she said weakly, glancing over at Jake, who was still standing behind her, his smirk growing wider with every passing moment. I stepped towards her, my hands trembling as I reached for the phone.
Jake lifted his hand to intercept me, his fingers closing around it like a vice.
"Let me see that," I said quietly.
"You sure you want to do this?" he asked, turning the device over in his hand slowly.

I watched as Belle’s eyes followed the motion of the phone, growing wider as she realized what I was about to do.
"Just tell him, Belle," Jake urged, his voice low but firm.
Belle swallowed hard, her eyes flickering between us. "I... I've been seeing someone else," she confessed, her voice barely audible.
Jake nodded, his expression softening slightly. "And it's not who you think," he added, glancing at me with a hint of regret.
