I have been in love with my best friend for a whole decade.
I know it's stupid to still not say it yet, but I'm too scared that it will ruin our friendship.
We've been best friends since kindergarten, and now we're finally in high school together.
Zeph had a sleepover at my house, and it was also our first day of being a high school student. We were curled up in my bed.
We didn't talk much about school today, but I know we're going to talk about it a lot tomorrow since we will have the first day of school orientation.
"Xio," Zeph called softly while tapping my shoulder gently as I was lost in my own thoughts.
"Yes?"
I turned my head to him with a smile on my lips.
"Do you want some hot chocolate?"
He was holding two cups of hot chocolate on his hands, and one of them had a straw in it.
I knew that the one with the straw was mine because I don't like the whipped cream on top.
"Yes, please."
I took the cup from his hand and smiled at him before taking a sip from the straw.
"Umm... this is so good!"
I said while he chuckled and sat down beside me.
"I know, right? My mom just bought this new flavor. It's caramel," he explained further.
"Caramel is my favorite! Thank you, Zeph."
I shift slightly on the bed, my eyes fixed on the person beside me.
The sweet scent of caramel mingles with Zeph's familiar cologne, creating a comforting aroma that envelops us.
I inch closer to him, pretending to reach for the tissue box on his side of the bed.
Our shoulders brush against each other, sending a jolt of electricity through my body.
My heart pounds in my chest as I feel his warmth radiating towards me.
Zeph continues sipping his hot chocolate, seemingly oblivious to our proximity.
I, on the other hand, struggle to keep my hands steady around my cup.
The straw trembles against my lips as I take another sip, acutely aware of how close we are.
Suddenly, Zeph turns to face me, his phone in hand.
"Hey, Xio," he says, and I freeze in place, his breath tickling my cheek.
I stare at my trembling hands, trying to calm my racing heart.
Zeph's shoulder remains pressed against mine, and the warmth from his body makes it hard to focus on anything else.
He sets down his hot chocolate and pulls out his phone, the screen's glow illuminating his face in the dim bedroom light.
"Hey, let's commemorate our first high school sleepover," he suggests, holding up his phone.
My stomach does a flip as he leans in even closer, his familiar scent of mint shampoo washing over me.
I manage a shaky nod, knowing I'll treasure this photo forever, even if he never knows how special this moment really is.
