I was in my final semester of high school, and it was all boys.
I never really had a problem with that, as I was shy and didn't really talk much.
I was okay with having all boys as friends, but sometimes I wished there were girls in my school, just to talk to.
I yearned for normalcy, just like other kids.
I didn't want to be different from them.
It had been three years since my mom left us, and even though my dad tried his best to take care of me, I still missed her.
I missed having both parents to take care of me, to listen to me when I had problems, to have a mom who would buy clothes and accessories for me, and a dad who would protect me from harm.
I missed being a normal kid with two parents.
Sometimes I wished I could turn back time so that my parents could be together again, just like they used to be.
But that was impossible.
My dad worked hard to give me the best life he could, but he couldn't buy me another mom.
I knew he did his best, and I was grateful for that.
During English class, I slouched in my chair and barely listened to what Mrs. Peterson was saying.
My pencil moved across the pages of my notebook, tracing patterns and doodles.
The classroom was stuffy, and the clock on the wall seemed to tick slower than usual.
I glanced at Ella, who was sitting two rows ahead of me.
She was taking careful notes as Mrs. Peterson lectured about Shakespeare's plays.
The sunlight streaming through the dusty windows highlighted her blonde hair, which fell in soft waves down her back.
As I watched her, my doodles gradually transformed into sketches of her profile.
Whenever Ricky turned around to peer over my shoulder, I quickly covered my notebook with my hand.
I didn't want anyone to see what I had drawn.
Ella turned her head slightly, and for a brief moment, our eyes met.
I fidgeted with my pencil, pretending to be engrossed in Mrs. Peterson's analysis of Romeo and Juliet.
Ella shifted in her seat, adjusting her notebook.
I quickly looked down at my own notebook, where my fingers continued to draw the outline of her profile.
My fingers smudged the graphite as I traced her features.
When I glanced up again, she had half-turned in her chair, reaching for something in her bag.
Our eyes met once more, but this time she didn't immediately look away.
