I am Joy, a certified nerd.
My best friend, Vikram, is a hunk of a guy and a player nonetheless.
He is 6 years older than me and has been my friend since I was in college.
I am 30 now and he is 36.
Vikram has always had a thing for my Mom, Sanjana.
She is 43 years old and single.
I knew about this but never gave it much thought.
I mean, why would I?
It's not like she's going to date him or anything.
Plus, he's my best friend and way older than me.
So, it's not like I'm worried that he's going to steal her away from me or something.
But one day, he told me that he wants her as his girlfriend.
I was shocked but I helped him out anyway because that's what friends are for.
"Hey Vikram! What's up?"
I said as I answered his call.
"Not much, Joy. How are you?"
He asked as he chuckled at my silly question.
"I am good, thanks. What's new with you?"
I asked as I sat down on my chair in my home office.
"I want to talk to you about something."
He said and my mind immediately went blank.
"Okay...What is it?"
I asked nervously.
"I want to ask your mom out on a date."
He said and I was shocked...
"What?!"
I grip my phone tighter, staring at the blank computer screen in front of me.
The ceiling fan above whirs lazily, casting a gentle breeze over the room.
Seconds tick by, and the silence between us stretches like an elastic band.
My throat suddenly feels dry.
I take a slow sip from my water bottle, buying time to gather my thoughts.
Vikram waits patiently on the other end of the line; I can hear him shifting slightly in his chair.
My gaze drifts to the family photo on my desk—a picture of Mom smiling brightly at my graduation day.
I close my eyes, inhale deeply, and exhale slowly.
"Okay," I say finally, surprised by how steady my voice sounds.
"I'll help you. What do you need me to do?"
"Thanks, Joy. I'll text you the details later. Bye."
He said and hung up.
I put my phone down on the table and started pacing around my apartment.
My mind was running wild with all the possible scenarios.
What if he asks her out and she says yes?
What if they go on a date and she doesn't like him?
What if she does like him and they start dating?
What if they get married?
I shook my head to clear my thoughts.
I was getting ahead of myself.
I needed to focus on the present moment and not worry about what might happen in the future.
My phone buzzed on the table, pulling me out of my thoughts.
It was a text from Vikram.
"Hey, let's meet at Starbucks tomorrow morning at 10 am. We can discuss the details then."
I stared at the screen for a few seconds before typing out a quick reply.
"Okay."
I put my phone back down and continued pacing around my apartment.
My mind was still racing with thoughts of Vikram and my mom.
I tried to distract myself by watching TV, but I couldn't focus on anything.
Eventually, I decided to go to bed early, hoping that sleep would help me clear my head. The next morning, I woke up feeling groggy and tired.
I got dressed and headed to Starbucks to meet Vikram.
As I waited for him to arrive, I couldn't help but think about all the times he had commented on how beautiful my mom was during our hangouts.
How he would always stare at her when she walked into the room.
How he would always find excuses to touch her arm or shoulder when they talked.
I felt a knot form in my stomach as I thought about it all.
When Vikram arrived, we ordered our drinks and sat down at a table outside.
"So, what's the plan?"
I asked him, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Well, first things first, we need to make sure your mom is single."
He said as he took a sip of his coffee.
"Yeah, she is."
I replied, nodding my head.
"Okay, good. Next, we need to figure out how to get them together."
He said as he set his cup down on the table. "I don't know. Maybe we could set them up on a blind date?"
I suggested, trying to sound casual despite the butterflies in my stomach.
"That's not a bad idea," he said as he nodded his head thoughtfully.
