I was a college girl.
I was in my first year.
I was bold, straightforward, and confident.
I saw him on the first day of my college life.
He was a senior.
He had curly hair, veiny arms, and a perfect gym body.
He also had a silver bracelet around his arm, which was my favourite.
I liked him first.
He saw me staring at him and smiled.
I smiled back too but kept looking at him.
He came to me and introduced himself as Tihi, a final-year student.
I told him my name, Natalie.
He asked for my number and I gave it to him without hesitation.
He texted me immediately after introducing himself, so I could save his number.
He messaged me, "You’re beautiful."
I smiled and texted him back, "Thanks."
And that was the start of our conversation.
Tihi kept trying to get my attention every single day.
He would come to my class just to see me, sit with me during lectures, follow me everywhere I went in the college, and even drop me home after college every day.
I liked all the things he did for me and enjoyed his company, but I never gave him any hint that I was interested in him beyond friendship because I didn’t want any serious relationship at that point in my life.
After our last lecture ends, I stay in the classroom while Tihi packs his books.
My heart beats fast as I walk to his desk and stand there, holding my bag tightly.
He looks up at me and his curly hair falls over his eyes.
The silver bracelet around his arm catches the afternoon light coming through the window.
I clear my throat to get his attention.
"Hey Tihi," I say, trying to sound casual.
He looks up at me with a surprised smile.
"Hey Natalie," he replies, putting his books into his bag.
I shift my weight from one foot to the other, feeling a little nervous.
"Um, do you want to grab coffee with me at the campus café?" I ask, trying to sound confident.
Tihi looks at me for a moment, then smiles again.
"Sure," he says, standing up and slinging his bag over his shoulder.
We walk out of the classroom together, our shoulders occasionally brushing against each other as we make our way down the hallway.
The familiar scent of his cologne fills my senses, making my stomach flutter. We reach the entrance of the café and Tihi holds the door open for me with his veiny hand extended.
Inside the café, I choose a corner table away from the crowd and sit down.
Tihi goes to the counter to order our drinks.
I watch as he talks to the barista, his muscular frame towering over her.
He turns around and walks back to me, carrying two steaming cups in his hands.
He sets them down on the table and slides into the seat next to me instead of across from me.
My pulse quickens at his proximity.
He hands me my coffee, his arm brushing against mine as he does so.
I take a sip to steady myself, but nearly spill it when his leg presses against mine under the table.
I look up at him, and our eyes meet.
I notice that he is studying my face intently, taking in every detail.
