"Alex!"
I hear the scream just in time to turn around and see Mia tumbling through the air.
She’s fallen off the narrow ledge we were hiking along, and now she’s going to land herself a concussion—or worse.
Without thinking, I drop my backpack and sprint to her rescue, ignoring the steep cliff face that drops off to the left.
There’s a small ledge about fifteen feet below where I can see her hitting and bouncing.
Then she rolls and falls again, this time careening off a tree trunk and coming to a stop against a boulder.
"Mia!"
I take a running leap off the edge, trying to land close to her.
It’s not a straight drop, so I hope I’ll be able to slide down to her on the steep hillside.
"Stay awake! Don’t close your eyes!"
I’m talking before I hit the ground, trying to get her attention.
"Alex?"
She’s dazed and disoriented, but she’s talking.
That’s good.
That’s very good.
I land hard on my chest, the wind knocked out of me, but I don’t have time to worry about that.
"Mia, don’t go to sleep."
