I remember the night I met her like it was yesterday.
It was cold.
The kind of cold that bites through even the thickest of fur.
My brother and I were huddled in an alleyway off Fleet Street, trying to catch a few winks before we had to start scavenging for food.
We'd lost our mum a few weeks back, and hadn't quite got the hang of hunting for ourselves yet.
I was exhausted.
I'd been running on empty for days, my eyes twitching every time I heard a pebble roll or a pigeon flap its wings.
My brother was no better, his ears twitching every time a car drove by.
We'd had to run from a pack of wild dogs the night before, and he was still jumpy.
