I watched as the Gothic mansion came into view, and my heart began to pound.
I had never been to Monster Academy before, but I had heard a lot about it.
It was the secret school that all the young Greek monsters went to.
Well, secret from the humans, that is.
The humans had no idea that monsters existed, let alone lived and went to school in a big old mansion on the outskirts of the city.
My mother, Medusa, had come with me to take me to my first day.
She hadn’t wanted me to travel alone.
I was kind of glad that she came with me.
I was nervous, and having her here with me made me feel a lot better.
She had inherited her gaze from her father, Poseidon, and could petrify objects with just one look.
I had inherited that same gaze from her, but thankfully, I didn’t have to live with green locks like she did.
Monster Academy
I fidgeted with my purple locks, the snakes coiling around my fingers as we got closer to the mansion.
Mom put her hand on my shoulder, and I could feel her green serpents swaying gently behind her head.
The iron gates opened, and we stepped into the courtyard.
I looked around at the cobblestones and the old statues that were scattered all over the place.
They were all of people in various poses, but they looked kind of strange.
I pointed to one of them and asked Mom, "What are those?"
She smiled at me and replied, "Those are all previous students who didn’t master their gaze control. They were turned to stone."
I gasped, and she laughed.
"Only joking," she said.
"I don’t know what they are. I have never been here before either."
Monster Academy
I looked back at the statues and then up at the mansion.
It was huge, with big gothic windows that looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in years.
There were gargoyles perched on top of the building, and it looked like they were looking down at us.
The front door opened, and a young minotaur came out carrying a suitcase in each hand.
He walked down the steps and then looked around for something or someone.
He must have spotted what he was looking for because he headed off across the courtyard to a small car that was parked near the gates. A harpy flew overhead carrying two bags in her talons.
She glided over to where the minotaur had left his bags and dropped them next to his.
I watched as she flew off again, this time with a small bag in each hand.
She must be going back for more things from wherever she had come from.
I wondered what it was like to fly like that.
I had always wanted to fly; I thought it would be amazing to soar through the air like that harpy did.
I heard someone behind me say, "Welcome to Monster Academy," and I turned around to see a tall man with horns coming towards us.
He was wearing a suit and tie, but I could see his tail swishing behind him as he walked towards us.
I lowered my eyes to the cobblestones beneath my feet as he approached us.
"Your journey begins now," he said, his voice echoing with a promise of the unknown.
Monster Academy
Mom led me to a secluded corner of the courtyard, where several marble statues stood in dramatic poses.
She removed her sunglasses and looked at me.
I did the same, and our serpentine eyes met.
Her green snakes hissed at my purple ones, and I could feel them writhing with anticipation.
We both focused our gaze on a nearby statue of a warrior, his sword raised high in triumph.
As we stared at him, the stone began to shimmer and shift.
The surface of the statue changed from smooth marble to rough granite.
Then, as we continued to gaze at him, it transformed again into limestone.
Mom stifled a laugh, and we moved on to the next statue.
But before we could focus our gaze on it, we heard footsteps approaching from behind us.
Monster Academy
I spun around, my purple snakes coiling defensively, and quickly slipped my sunglasses back on.
Through the dark lenses, I could make out a tall figure with gleaming yellow eyes and sharp teeth approaching us.
My mother tensed beside me, but then she relaxed as recognition dawned on her face.
The stranger's familiar gait triggered a memory from my childhood - the lycan who used to visit our home when I was little.
He smiled, revealing more pointed teeth, and greeted my mother by name.
Monster Academy
My snakes settled as he drew closer, but I kept my guard up, studying his movements.
"Medusa, it's been too long," he said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the air.
"Indeed, Fenrir," my mother replied, her tone warm yet cautious. "What brings you here today?"
Fenrir glanced at me, his yellow eyes narrowing slightly. "I came to ensure your daughter knows the truth about her heritage before she steps foot inside Monster Academy."
