It's the year 2019 and I'm sitting in my room on my bed with my headphones on, listening to music and writing down lyrics in my notebook.
I'm Mohamed Abdi, an 18-year-old Somali-Danish boy living in Århus, Denmark, with my family.
I have dark skin, braids, and I'm wearing a black tracksuit, sneakers, and my headphones.
I just graduated from high school and I want to make music, but my dad is against it.
He wants me to take over his electrical company after I finish my education.
I don't want that.
I want to be a famous rapper.
I have many friends who support me and hang with me.
They all like my music and they think I should go for it.
I walk from my room to the basement hangout spot in Rosenhøj, where my friends are waiting for me.
We all sit on the couches and turn on the PlayStation to play FIFA 20.
We all laugh at each other and talk trash while we're playing.
After a while, we turn off the PlayStation and start talking about music.
I tell them I've written some new lyrics and they all want to hear them.
I stand up and go to the recording booth in the basement.
I adjust the mic stand and put on my headphones.
My friends are all sitting outside the booth, waiting for me to start.
I take a deep breath and start rapping.
I finish the song and my friends all clap and cheer for me.
They all say it's a good song and that I should upload it to Spotify.
I agree with them and we all go upstairs to my room to upload the song.
I create a new Spotify artist account and upload the song.
It's called "Fokus" and it's my first single.

As I hit "publish," I realize this is the moment my life begins to change.
I refresh Spotify obsessively over the next weeks, watching the stream count climb.
My friends text me screenshots whenever they spot big jumps in numbers.
Mahad, one of my friends, has just gotten a new iPhone and offers to help me film a music video for "Fokus."
We decide to film it in Rosenhøj.
Jannik and Ali agree to be extras, and we plan to shoot scenes in the courtyard, on the basketball court, and in the basement studio.
The day of the shoot arrives, and we're all excited.
Mahad sets up his camera, and I get into position.
We start filming, and I rap along to my song while Jannik and Ali hang out in the background.
After a few takes, we move on to the basketball court.
Mahad films me rapping while I'm playing basketball, and then we head to the basement studio for some final shots.

When we're done filming, Mahad edits the footage together, and we upload it to YouTube.
I stay up late that night responding to comments from local fans who've seen the video. A few weeks later, I wake up to an email from Spotify saying that my first payment is on its way.
I log into my bank account and stare at the screen in disbelief when I see 30,000 kroner sitting there.
"Yo, Mohamed, you see that?" Mahad says, pointing at the screen with wide eyes.
I nod slowly, still processing the number.
"This is it, man," Jannik adds, grinning. "You're really doing it."
