I hold up the device and press a button on it.
A low hum fills the air as it charges up.
Lila's eyes meet mine, and for the first time, I see defiance turn into a knowing smile.
I study her expression as the device pulses with energy.
She shouldn't be smiling right now.
Something feels off.
Lucas stands guard by the cell door while I adjust the settings on the device.
I increase the power to maximum and press another button.
A blue light shoots out from the device, illuminating Lila's face.
Her eyes remain clear, focused on me as if she's trying to read my thoughts.
She takes a step closer to the barrier between us, examining the device with an academic interest.
I notice her fingers twitching in a peculiar pattern, as if she's taking mental notes of something.
When I press the activation button, the device sparks and dies in my hand.
