I am a nerd.
I am an American college student studying computer science in the UK.
I am also very, very awkward, especially when it comes to girls.
I don’t have much experience with them.
Never been on a date, nor kissed a girl.
Well, not in this life, anyway.
For some reason, I can shapeshift into this gorgeous teenage girl with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Her name is Georgia, and she is beautiful and popular and everything I wish I could be.
When I am her, though, I can do things I never thought I could do.
Like talk to girls.
And get their attention.
It’s all very confusing, but also exhilarating.
I’m not sure what’s going on, or why I can shape shift, but I’m not complaining.
Not one bit.
This is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
"Mike?"
I looked up from my laptop and towards the door of the library, where my friend Alex had just walked in and said my name.
"Yeah?"
I replied, closing down the lid of my MacBook as I did so.
As we were in the library, I kept my voice low so as not to disturb any of the other students working around us.
"What are you doing here?"
He came over and sat down in the chair across from me.
Mika And The Alien Princess
I shifted uncomfortably in my own wooden chair as he leaned forward and narrowed his eyes at me.
The fluorescent lights in the library were harsh and unforgiving, casting shadows across his face and making him look even more suspicious than he normally did.
Alex was a tall, lean guy with brown hair that was always perfectly styled and a wardrobe that looked like it belonged in a fashion magazine.
He was one of the most popular guys in school, and he knew it.
"Come on," he said, pulling out his phone from his pocket.
"I saw this on Instagram last night. You tell me what you think."
He tapped on the screen of his phone for a few seconds before turning it around to show me.
It was an Instagram post from last night, but it wasn’t just any post.
It was a photo of Georgia sitting at the campus coffee shop with Hannah and Morgan, her two best friends.
Georgia was wearing a distinctive blue sweater in the picture.
Mika And The Alien Princess
The same blue sweater that I had on right now. "What is this?"
I asked him, my heart racing in my chest.
I knew I hadn’t posted this photo, so who had?
And how had they gotten a picture of Georgia?
"Georgia posted it last night," Alex said, his voice low but full of suspicion.
"And look at this."
He zoomed in on the picture so that I could see Georgia’s face more clearly.
"Do you see anything strange about this?"
I looked closely at the picture, but I couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary.
It was just Georgia sitting at the coffee shop with her friends, smiling for the camera.
"I don’t see anything," I said, shrugging my shoulders.
"Why? What am I looking for?"
"Well, for starters," Alex said, pointing to Georgia’s face in the picture.
"There is no way that this is a selfie. Georgia’s arm isn’t long enough to take a photo of herself from this angle. So who took this picture? And why is she posting it now? She hasn’t posted anything on social media in over a month."
I opened my mouth to respond, but then closed it again when I realized that I didn’t have an answer to those questions. "And there’s something else," Alex continued, tapping on the screen again to zoom in on another part of the picture.
"Do you see this?"
I looked where he was pointing and saw that he was referring to a book lying open on the table next to Georgia’s coffee cup.
"That book," Alex said, his voice dropping to a whisper.
"It's the same one you were reading last week, Mike. How is that possible?"
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my expression neutral.
Mika And The Alien Princess
My palms were growing sweaty and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest.
How did he know all of this?
And what was I supposed to say to him?
"Look, Alex," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about. I haven’t seen Georgia in weeks."
"Exactly," he said, his eyes narrowing at me.
"That’s another thing that doesn’t make sense. You and Georgia are never seen together anymore. What happened between you two? Did you guys have a fight or something?"
I shook my head, feeling like I was being backed into a corner.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," I repeated.
"There is nothing going on between me and Georgia."
Mika And The Alien Princess
Alex raised an eyebrow at me, clearly not believing a word I was saying.
"Fine," he said, standing up from his chair.
"If you want to play it that way, then so be it. But mark my words, Mike. I am going to figure out what is going on here. And when I do, there will be consequences."
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me sitting alone in the library feeling confused and scared.
I knew that I couldn’t keep lying to Alex forever.
Eventually, he was going to find out the truth about me and Georgia.
And when he did, I had no idea what would happen next. "You want proof? Fine."
I grabbed his arm and pulled him towards the men's bathroom.
He stumbled after me as I pushed open the door and looked around to make sure no one was inside.
The bathroom was empty except for us, so I locked the main door behind us and turned to face him.
"What are you doing?"
Alex asked, looking at me like I had lost my mind.
"You want proof?"
I repeated, closing my eyes and focusing on the familiar tingling sensation that always came before a shift.
It started in my toes and worked its way up through my body until it reached the top of my head.
As it traveled through me, I could feel my body changing shape and form until I was no longer myself but someone else entirely.
When I opened my eyes again, Alex was staring at me with his mouth hanging open in shock.
"You...you're..."
"Georgia," I finished for him, my voice now higher and softer.
Alex took a step back, his eyes wide with disbelief.
Mika And The Alien Princess
"But how? This is impossible!"
