Chapter 1
"Are you sure this is a good idea?"
Pinkney asked.
I rolled my eyes.
"Of course it is. We do this all the time."
"But what if we get caught?"
"We won’t," I said, even though I wasn’t entirely sure that was true.
But I couldn’t back out now, not when I’d been the one to come up with the idea in the first place.
And besides, Pinkney was just being paranoid.
"But if we do get caught," Pinkney said, her heart-shaped body quivering with fear, "we could be in big trouble."
I tried to keep my voice calm and reassuring.
"We won’t. We’re just going in for a quick snack, then we’ll sneak out again. Nobody will even know we were here."
"But what if the cops come?"
"They won’t," I insisted.
"And even if they do, we’ll just hide until they leave."
Pinkney didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t say anything else.
I knew there was no changing her mind once it was made up, so I just gave her a pat on the back and hoped for the best.
But as we crept through the dark alleyway that led to the gas station, I had a bad feeling that maybe this time would be different.
Maybe this time we really would get caught.
I tried to ignore the feeling, to push it down and pretend everything was going to be fine.
But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake it.
It felt like there was a weight on my chest, dragging me down and making it hard to breathe.
It felt like I was hiding something, even though I wasn’t.
For as long as I could remember, I’d always been the same: cheerful, mischievous, and not afraid of anything.
I never let anything bother me for long; I just pushed past whatever was in my way and kept going.
This was the attitude that had helped me survive all these years, and even though sometimes things had gotten tough, it had worked for me so far.
But now… It felt like something had changed, like I was different somehow.
Not on the outside—I still looked exactly the same as I always had—but on the inside.
There was something new there, something that had never been there before.
Something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
Apparently Pinkney had noticed it too.
"You’re acting weird," she said with a frown as we crept through the shadows of the alleyway.
"What do you mean?"
I asked defensively.
"Nothing. Never mind."
She shrugged her little shoulders and kept walking.
"No, tell me," I insisted.
"What’s wrong with how I’m acting?"
"Well…"
Pinkney hesitated for a moment, and then said, "I don’t know. You’re just not yourself tonight."
"There’s nothing wrong with me," I said firmly.
"I’m just fine."
We walked in silence for a minute or two before Pinkney finally spoke again.
"Is this about what happened last week?"
"What are you talking about?"
I asked, even though I already knew exactly what she meant.
"You know what happened," Pinkney said softly.
"It really bothered you. Even after you told us not to worry about it." "What happened wasn’t a big deal," I said quickly, hoping to change the subject before Pinkney could say anything else.
"And besides, Max and Emilia promised they wouldn’t tell anyone."
