The wind howls, whipping my hair into a frenzy as I stand atop the rocky outcropping.
Before me lies the most unforgiving landscape in all of Eridoria: miles upon miles of sand dunes that ripple and stretch towards the horizon.
Somewhere amidst the shifting sea of sand lies the secret city of the Mesas.
I’ve heard tell of its towering spires and glittering glass temples from travelers who’ve braved the treacherous passage through the dunes.
They speak of the city in hushed, awed tones as a place of ancient magic.
Yet, despite their claims, no cartographer has ever successfully mapped the route to the hidden city... until now.
I turn to Jaxon Rye, my fellow cartographer and closest friend.
His eyes are narrowed against the wind, his sharp features pinched in concentration as he surveys our handiwork.
The sandstorm that swept in an hour ago has begun to clear, revealing miles of rocky outcroppings and sandy swells.
"We did it," I say, grinning at him.
"We bloody well did."
Jaxon’s eyes flicker to me, his lips curling into a smirk.
"Of course we did. I’m a master cartographer."
He’s taller than me by nearly three inches, his dark hair cut closer to the head than mine, curled and messy in a way that adds to his allure.
I roll my eyes.
"And humble."
