I was in the bath, and I had to be quick.
I could not let my fins be seen by anyone, or my secret would be revealed.
I had been a mermaid all my life, but I loved a human named Allen.
I did not care that he was a human and I a mermaid; I did not listen to my parents.
They told me it was wrong to love a human, but I did not listen.
I would see Allen every day and loved him more and more.
Allen worked in a small shop as a mechanic, but one day I would tell him about my underwater palace.
I knew he thought it was just a story, but I did not care; I was going to tell him the truth one day.
I planned to tell him when the time was right, but my father, King Neptune, did not want me to reveal my true identity to any human.
He forbade me from doing so, and I knew it would be difficult for him to accept it.
But I was determined and loved Allen so much that I would do anything for him.
As I bathed quickly, I heard someone trying to come into the room.
I knew it was Allen; he had come to see me.
I tried to get out of the bath quickly, but my fins were still there.
Merman's Secret Love
Sprawled on the wet bathroom floor, I desperately rubbed my scaly tail with a towel.
The iridescent fins refused to disappear, and I watched in horror as they remained.
The doorknob rattled again, and my heart raced.
I heard Allen's footsteps shifting outside the door.
"Everything okay in there?" he called out, his voice muffled through the closed door.
I grabbed the bath oils and hastily poured them over my tail, continuing to rub furiously.
The transformation usually took five minutes, but I needed it to happen now.
The scales began to fade, but too slowly.
Allen knocked again, this time more insistent.
"Hey, I heard a splash—are you sure you're alright?" Allen's voice was tinged with concern.
Merman's Secret Love
"Just a minute, Allen!" I replied, trying to keep the panic out of my voice.
The door creaked open slightly, and Allen peeked in, his eyes widening as he caught sight of my shimmering tail.
My heart pounded in my chest as I clutched the towel, yanking it over my scales.
Allen stood frozen in the doorway, his eyes fixed on the sight before him.
I twisted away from him, pressing myself against the cold porcelain tub.
The fabric snagged on my still-wet fins, and I winced as I tried to cover myself.
Bath water dripped onto the floor tiles, creating small puddles that reflected the golden shimmer of my partially visible tail.

Allen took a step forward, his work boots squeaking on the wet floor.
I gripped the towel tighter, feeling my scales slowly beginning to soften into skin beneath the fabric.
"Luna?" he whispered, reaching a hand toward me.
My heart pounded in my chest as I watched him hesitate, his hand hovering in the air.
I could feel the transformation continuing, but it was agonizingly slow.
Allen's eyes were fixed on the scales peeking out from beneath the towel, his face a mixture of confusion and disbelief.
The water continued to drip from my tail, pooling around us on the tile floor.
Suddenly, Allen's hand dropped to his side, and he stepped back into the doorway.
His eyes never left mine as he slowly shut the door behind him, the click of the latch echoing through the silent bathroom.
He slid down to sit on the floor against the door, keeping a safe distance between us.
I watched as his face cycled through confusion, disbelief, and finally, wonder.
The transformation continued its painfully slow progress - I could feel each scale melting into skin.
"Luna, is this why you always seemed so secretive?" Allen's voice was soft, filled with a mix of awe and hurt.
Merman's Secret Love
"Yes, Allen," I replied, my voice trembling, "I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid of what it would mean for us."
He took a deep breath, his eyes searching mine for answers. "So, what does this mean for us now?"
My heart pounded in my chest as I watched Allen process the truth.
The bathroom felt smaller, the steam clinging to the mirrors while my tail continued its gradual transformation beneath the damp towel.
When Allen shifted his position against the door, I flinched, but his eyes remained fixed on the shimmering scales still visible at my ankles.
The silence stretched between us, broken only by the steady drip of water from my fins.
Fighting against my instinct to flee, I inched forward on the wet tiles.
