I am a mermaid, but I'm not living in the sea.
I am in love with a human named Allen, and I must be with him.
So I took the magic from my mother's pearl to make myself become a human.
But I can only be a human for a short period of time.
If I don't go back to the water every day, my body will start to decay.
That's why I need to soak in the bath every day.
I know he's trying to come in when I hear the doorknob turn.
I quickly cover my body with the shower curtain and frantically try to pull myself out of the tub.
My legs are not fully grown yet, and I'm struggling to get myself out.
I keep slipping back into the water and sliding into the tub.
I look like a fish out of water, except this time it's literally true.
I am desperate to get out and hide my true self from him.
I finally make it out and hold onto the side of the tub for balance.
I'm so shaky that I might fall over if I don't.
Merman's Regret
Water splashes against the porcelain as I fumble with the faucet handles, my wet hands slipping on the chrome.
The rushing water echoes off the bathroom tiles, creating a thunderous cascade that masks my labored breathing and the scraping of scales against the tub's edge.
My tail flops uselessly against the floor as I pull myself toward the toilet, using it as an anchor.
I can't let Allen see me like this.
The transformation burns through my body, starting at my fins.
They morph into legs, slowly and painfully.
My scales recede into skin, leaving me feeling raw and exposed.
I grit my teeth against the pain and force myself to stand up straight.
Just as I'm about to call out to Allen, he knocks again.
His footsteps pause outside the door, and then his knuckles rap against the wood.
"Hey, are you okay in there?" he asks, his voice muffled by the thick wood of the door.
I take a deep breath and try to sound casual.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I call out.
"Just taking a shower."
"Why do you always take so long?" Allen's voice carries a hint of concern, mixed with curiosity.
Merman's Regret
I hesitate, knowing the truth could unravel everything.
"It's just... I like to soak and relax," I reply, hoping he won't press further.
I grip the toilet bowl, my heart pounding in my chest.
I can hear his footsteps retreating down the hall, and I let out a sigh of relief.
The transformation has left me weak and lightheaded, but I know I have to get out of here before he comes back.
My skin still tingles where scales had been just moments before, but I push myself to stand on shaky legs.
I reach for the towel hanging on the rack, but before I can grab it, a sharp crack splits the air.
I freeze, my heart racing.
The bathroom window rattles in its frame, and I turn to see it shudder under the force of the wind.
The evening air has picked up, carrying with it the promise of a storm.
I stumble toward the window, intent on checking the latch, but before I can reach it, the glass shatters outward.
Rain lashes against my skin as I stagger back, shielding my face from the shards.
Merman's Regret
Through the spray of rain, I see a dark silhouette perched on the ledge outside.
"Who are you?" I shout, my voice barely audible over the howling wind.
The figure leans forward, revealing a pair of piercing eyes that seem to glow in the dim light.
"You know who I am," the figure replies, their voice smooth and unsettling. "I'm here to remind you of the price you must pay."
