guitarist who falls madly in love with a journalist at his concert prologue
I was in the middle of a concert, and I couldn’t stop staring at her.
She was standing just offstage, her eyes wide and her mouth hanging open as she watched me play.
I’d never seen anyone look at me like that before, like I was the most amazing thing they’d ever seen.
And I knew I wasn’t imagining it, because she was clutching a notebook to her chest, and I could see the words written on the page in big, bold letters: JAMESON CLARKE IS A GOD.
I’d been playing guitar for as long as I could remember, and I’d had my fair share of fans over the years.
But this girl—this beautiful, redheaded girl with the big green eyes—she wasn’t just a fan.
She was something else entirely.
And for some reason, that made me want to play even harder.
I let my fingers fly over the strings of my guitar, losing myself in the music as I played the final notes of our last song.
But I hardly heard them.
All I could think about was the way that girl was looking at me, and how badly I wanted to go over there and find out what her name was, and what she was writing about in that notebook of hers.
I was so lost in my thoughts that it took me a second to realize that the other guys in the band were all staring at me, waiting for my answer.
I could see the panic in their eyes, and I quickly shook myself out of my reverie and moved to the microphone.
“Encore,” I said simply, and the crowd went even crazier, if that was even possible.
Jonah, our drummer, counted us in, and we launched into our final song of the night.
I’d played this song a thousand times before, but it had never felt like this.
My heart was pounding in my chest as I played, the music rushing through me as I moved onstage with the rest of the band.
We were on fire, and the crowd was still with us every step of the way as we finished our set.
We ended on a high note, and the crowd went wild as we took our final bows before disappearing backstage.
The other guys headed straight for the dressing room, but I hesitated for a second when I spotted the girl standing at the edge of the stage.
She was still there, even though the rest of the band had already left.
She was watching me with those big green eyes of hers, and her mouth was still hanging open like she couldn’t quite believe what she’d just seen.
For a second, I wondered if maybe she wanted an autograph or something, but then she shook her head as if she’d just realized where she was and what she was doing there.
She looked around for a second, her eyes scanning the empty stage, before she finally turned and hurried away down the stairs.
I hesitated for another second before following her.
“Jameson,” Jonah called after me, but I didn’t listen.
I hurried to catch up to her, but by the time I reached the bottom of the stairs, she was already gone.
I could see her in the distance as she hurried down the hallway, her red hair flying behind her as she dashed around the corner.
I followed after her, but when I finally caught up to her, she was ducking into a room at the end of the hall.
The door slammed shut behind her before I could even catch a glimpse of who she really was.
I hesitated for another second before pushing open the door and stepping inside.
The room was dark, lit only by a small lamp on the nightstand next to a rumpled bed.
I couldn’t see much, but I could hear her breathing somewhere in the darkness, and I knew that she was here with me now.

I heard it again—Jameson—it was softer this time, more of a whisper than anything else.
I turned around and saw her standing at the foot of the bed, watching me with those big green eyes of hers.
I’d been dreaming about those eyes for weeks now—ever since I’d seen them in that first photo of her on the website my ex-girlfriend had made for me—and I’d been trying so hard not to think about them tonight while I was on stage.
But now they were looking at me like that again, and I couldn’t think about anything else but her.
“Jameson,” she said again, and this time it was like I could hear her voice in my head instead of through my ears.
She wasn’t speaking out loud—I was sure of it—but I could still hear her voice as if it was right next to me, whispering my name with an intimacy that made my heart race even faster than before.
“Who are you?”
I whispered back, even though I knew she would never be able to hear me.
She didn’t answer, but she kept staring at me with those big green eyes of hers.
And then suddenly I realized what I was doing—I had been watching her watch me for almost our entire concert tonight—and I felt myself flush with embarrassment as I looked away from her for the first time all night long.
She was still watching me as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing, but I didn’t let myself look at her again as I made my way around the room and back towards the door where I’d come in.
But as soon as I reached for the handle and tried to open it again, I realized that I couldn’t get out—someone had locked it after me—and I knew that I was stuck here in this room with this girl until they came to let me out again.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered to her as I turned around again and leaned against the door helplessly.
But when I looked up again, she was still staring at me with those big green eyes of hers.
I could see her watching me as if she were studying me—or maybe memorizing me—and there was something about the intensity of her gaze that made my heart start to race all over again.
She didn’t say anything in response to my apology.
Instead, she just kept staring at me until I wanted to scream with the need to know what she was thinking as she watched me like this.
“I have to go,” I said to her finally.
“I have a show to play.”
But even as I said the words out loud, I knew that they weren’t true.
The concert was over now; we’d already played our last song of the night and taken our final bows before disappearing backstage.
There was no encore tonight; we were finished here.
But even though the concert was over now, the music was still playing in my head as if it would never stop.
It took every ounce of my self-control not to close my eyes and lose myself in the sound of it as I waited for her to speak again.
And when she finally did…

Her eyes were wide as she stared at me, and there was something about the way that they were holding mine that made my heart start to race all over again.
“I can’t believe it’s you,” she said a moment later.
She took a step forward, and it was all that I could do not to reach out and grab her just then.
“I can’t believe that you’re really here…Jameson.”
But even as she said my name, a part of me already knew that it was true—I did know her, somehow.
It was like a door unlocking within me, and all at once, everything was different, somehow.
“I can’t believe it’s you,” I said back to her a moment later.
“Eliza.” And then it was like something inside of me finally clicked into place.
Yes, of course, that was her name—Eliza Bennett.
It was like a piece of myself had finally fallen back into place again, and it felt so right that for a moment, all that I could do was stand there and smile as if nothing else mattered.
“Eliza,” I said again a moment later.
And then suddenly, everything fell away except for the two of us standing there beside each other, as if we were the only two people on earth who existed.
My eyes drank her in as if they would never get enough of her while hers skimmed over every inch of my face, as if she were trying to memorize it all before my image disappeared forever.
It was like everything was falling back into place again, as if the world were finally where it was meant to be.
“I know you,” I said to her a moment later.
“I don’t know how, but I know you.”
But even as the words left my lips, they felt like they were the most natural thing in the world for me to say.
My heart was racing all over again, but this time, it was different somehow.
I could see her watching me as if she were feeling the same way that I was, as if her heart were racing for the same reason.
“I know,” she said to me a moment later.
“I can’t believe that it’s really you.”
“Me neither,” I said to her.
But even as the words left my lips, they felt like they were wrong somehow.
Of course it was really me; it had to be.
The two of us just stood there staring at each other like that for who knew how long, but it was like some part of me already knew that we wouldn’t be able to do this forever.
And so finally, after what felt like an eternity, I took a step forward towards her.
And then, “Jameson!”
someone called my name from behind her, and it was like a spell was broken between us as we both turned to see who it was.
“No way,” Lucas called to me from across the room, where he was grinning at me from ear to ear.
“Is that really you?
You have got to be kidding me!”
I knew without having to ask that Eliza heard him too; behind us, someone opened the door in between us again, and the two of us turned away from each other before either of us even had a chance to say goodbye.
“Jameson!”
she called to me from across the room again just then, but there was nothing that I could do except go back through the door before it closed behind me once more.
The two of us had only just met, but already, something inside of me felt different than before; somehow, I knew that our lives were going to be bound up together in ways that neither one of us could ever have expected as the two of us disappeared in opposite directions again.
