Lyla Frese
I’m not supposed to be scared of thunderstorms.
I’m Lyla Frese.
I’m bold, I’m outgoing, I’m full of energy—and possibly full of sh*t if anyone asks my childhood best friend Caroline Giblin.
I’m a star lacrosse player, a fantastic hockey goalie, and I even represent my school as a volleyball player.
Thunderstorms should not scare me.
But they do.
And it’s not like I can hide it.
Not from Caroline, definitely not from her boyfriend Ben Coccaro, and certainly not from my parents.
My dad, Matt, is best friends with Ben’s dad.
We live next door.
My parents own six huge medical businesses: three in Canada and three in the U.S.
They’re more than willing to help out their friends and family whenever they can, which means they often host extravagant but fun parties at our home for all of us to hang out together.
I love those parties!
My mom, Mary, always makes sure there are enough appetizers and drinks to go around, and she never fails to remind me to "keep my sh*t together" when I invite all my friends over.
Matt & Me
At another of my parents' parties, I find myself cornered in the kitchen by Matt DeSantis, a guy from school who has been trying to get into my pants since the first day of our freshman year.
He's leaning against the marble counter, his blue eyes sparkling as he tells me a story about hockey practice.
I'm not really paying attention, but I pretend to be interested.
Moments later, Noah Davenport walks into the kitchen and grabs a handful of snacks from the counter.
He glances at us and smirks, then leans against the wall next to Matt.
"So, Lyla," Matt says, "what do you think about the new hockey coach?"
I shrug.
"I haven't met him yet."
"Oh, you'll love him," Noah says, grinning at me.
"He's tough but fair. And he's got a great sense of humor."
Matt & Me
Matt rolls his eyes.
"Yeah, because that's what matters most in a coach."
Noah ignores him and continues talking to me.
"So, have you thought about college yet?"
I nod.
"Yeah, I've been looking at a few schools."
"Any in particular?" he asks, his voice low and smooth.
"Well, I'm actually considering Northfield Mount Hermon boarding school for senior year," I say casually. Both Matt and Noah stare at me in surprise for a moment before they speak up.
"No way!"
Matt exclaims.
"We're both applying there too!"
Noah nods in agreement.
"Yeah, we've been friends since freshman year. We're rooming together if we get in."
"That's amazing!"
I exclaim.
"I didn't know that."
Matt smirks at me.
"Yeah, we're pretty close."
Noah glares at him and then turns back to me.
"So, what made you decide on NMH?"
I shrug again.
"I've heard great things about it. And it's close enough to home that I can still visit my parents whenever I want."
Noah nods thoughtfully.
"Yeah, that makes sense. It's definitely worth considering."
Matt clears his throat loudly and glares at Noah.
"Can we talk about something else?"
Noah ignores him and continues talking to me.
"So, what are your plans for the rest of the summer?"
I smile at him.
"Well, I'm going to spend some time with my family and friends. Maybe take a few road trips."
Matt & Me
"That sounds fun," Noah says wistfully.
"I wish I could do that."
As thunder rumbles outside, I excuse myself from the conversation and head upstairs.
I try to hide my trembling hands as I make my way to my room.
Noah follows me, saying he wants to continue our conversation.
When we reach my room, another thunderclap makes me jump.
Noah catches my arm and steadies me, and suddenly I'm pressed against his chest.
His fingers trace my jawline before he leans in and kisses me.
It starts off gentle, but soon we're both breathless and stumbling toward my bed.
Noah's hands tangle in my hair as he deepens the kiss.
Between kisses, I suggest a summer road trip with our friends.
Noah agrees, pulling me closer.

Matt & Me
But just as things are getting intense, we hear footsteps coming down the hallway.
We freeze, holding our breath until the footsteps pass by my room.
Then we quickly straighten our clothes and move away from each other. "What are you doing here?"
I sit cross-legged on my bed, my heart still racing from the kiss.
Noah closes my bedroom door and walks back toward me.
"I've wanted to kiss you for so long," he says, settling down beside me.
His fingers find mine, intertwining them together.
"Why didn't you ever say anything?"
I ask, looking down at our joined hands.
He shrugs.
"I didn't want to ruin our friendship."
Another loud thunderclap makes me flinch, and Noah pulls me onto his lap.
He wraps his arms around me protectively, holding me close as the storm rages on outside.
Matt & Me
His lips find my neck, trailing soft kisses up to my ear.
I turn to face him, running my hands through his hair as our lips meet again.
Between increasingly heated kisses, I confess that I've had feelings for him since freshman year.
Noah pulls back slightly, his eyes searching mine.
"Really? All this time, and we never said anything?"
Matt & Me
I nod, feeling a mix of relief and excitement.
As we catch our breath between kisses, the party's bass thumps from downstairs.
Noah's hands slide down my back, and I straddle his lap.
My heart races as his lips find my neck again.
Another crack of thunder makes me flinch, and Noah pulls back.
"I should go check on my sister at the party," he whispers.
Matt & Me
I walk him to my door, stealing one last deep kiss before he disappears downstairs.
Minutes later, Matt slips into my room, closing the door behind him.
He crosses to where I stand by my window and pulls me close.
His kiss is rough and demanding, but I kiss him back anyway.
Matt's lips press against mine, his hands gripping my waist tightly.
I lean into the kiss, tasting the remnants of mint on his breath and something stronger.
Lightning flashes outside my window, but for once I barely notice the storm raging outside.
My fingers curl into his shirt, pulling him closer.
But guilt twists in my stomach, remembering Noah's gentle kiss just minutes ago.
Matt & Me
There's something addictive about Matt's forceful approach, though.
He deepens the kiss, his tongue tangling with mine.
When he bites my lower lip, I gasp and arch against him.
Footsteps echo down the hallway outside my room, making us break apart.
