August 26, 2004, Athens Olympics
I can’t believe this day has finally come.
I’ve been working towards this for so many years, and now that it’s here, I just want to get out there and give it my all.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have some amazing coaches throughout my career, starting with Billy when I was a kid and running track in middle school.
My current coaches are just as wonderful and have helped me get to where I am today.
They believed in me even when I didn’t, and they pushed me to be my best.
I also can’t forget the man who started it all for me.
My dad was a coach for my first couple of years of track.
He was the one who got me interested in sports, and he was always there to support me at my meets.
He didn’t get to see me run in the Olympics, but I know he would be proud of me.
I can feel his presence around me, watching over me as I do what I love.
This is for you, Dad.
I take off like a shot when the starting gun goes off.
I can feel the wind rushing past my face as I barrel down the track.
My legs pump harder as the crowd’s energy surges through the stadium.
The familiar burn in my muscles reminds me of countless training sessions, but this time feels different.
Through the corner of my eye, I catch a glimpse of someone in the stands - a girl, leaning forward, completely absorbed in the race.
Her intense gaze meets mine for a split-second, and I see tears streaming down her face.
The sight jolts through me like electricity.
The track beneath my feet seems to disappear as I accelerate, my arms driving me forward with renewed power.
"Did you see her, Coach?" I gasp, slowing down after crossing the finish line.
"Yes, and there's something you need to know," Coach replies, his voice steady but urgent.
"She's your sister, and she's been looking for you for years."
I barely hear the questions during my post-race interview, my eyes scanning the crowded stands where I last saw her.
The gold medal ceremony feels like an eternity as I mechanically go through the motions, my mind racing with questions about the sister I never knew existed.
After stepping down from the podium, I clutch the medal in my hand and push through the crowd of reporters.
Coach Billy grabs my arm, pressing a worn envelope into my palm.
"Your father wrote this before he died," he says, his voice filled with a mix of sadness and determination.
"It explains everything about Megan."
I open the envelope, my heart pounding, and prepare to uncover the truth.
